Pain of defeat still hurts Jones

Derrygonnelly forward Garvan Jones admits that they are ‘gutted’ following their defeat to Scotstown in the Ulster club SFC.

The Fermanagh champions had high hopes of doing well in the provincial campaign as they embarked on their fourth consecutive Ulster run.

However, their efforts came undone at the first hurdle when the Monaghan champions produced an excellent second half to run out comfortable winners.

Derrygonnelly had looked impressive during the first half, but their second half collapse is one that will irk them for some time, according to Jones.

“We are all just gutted, having won the county title, we knew the game with Scotstown was no easy task as they are a formidable side and have won the Monaghan championship for the last four years,” Jones told the Fermanagh Herald.

“We had started well, and I actually think we were quite disappointed to go in at half time on level terms as we had bossed the first half.

“Scotstown started the second half much the better and the four points they kicked in a row really took the stuffing out of us.”

He added: “Maybe I have got greedy, but this club is doing everything right on and off the field, we feel we need to be in Ulster every year and that’s where we always want to be.

“There’s some serious potential in the club, the players coming into the senior panel are winners from youth level and we have developed a great bond as a squad over the last number of years and months.”
