Liam Rushe's involvement in this year's championship ended on a sour note when he received a straight red card for lashing out at Maurice Shanahan.

The All Star centre back's frustration got the better of him when his hurl made contact with his opponent's faceguard during Dublin's 1-19 to 2-21 All-Ireland SHC quarter-final defeat by Waterford at Semple Stadium.

The incident, which happened in injury-time, almost sparked a mass brawl, but referee Johnny Ryan was able to bring the situation under control. Waterford goal-scorer Shanahan had been booked moments earlier for a separate altercation between the two.

"It was an easy decision really because he (the referee) was left with no choice," RTE pundit Liam Sheedy said.

"When Liam Rushe looks back at that - for all that he's brought to the last few games - he'll be disappointed with the way his championship finished up."
