There was a large element of shadow boxing about some of the games but here's the players who stood out in round 5 of the hurling leagues ...

1. Anthony Nash (Cork)

Nash and his Rebel team-mates succumbed to a Lazarus-like comeback from Tipp but it's still all to play for with a last eight clash against Wexford next on the agenda.

2. Noel Connors (Waterford)

The former All Star defender proved to be the rock on which many a Wexford attack perished.

3. Peter Kelly (Dublin)

Redeployed to the number three jersey, Kelly and his defensive colleagues successfully got to grip with the Galway attack after the change of ends in Parnell Park.

4. Jackie Tyrrell (Kilkenny)

Tyrrell and the Cats laid down a marker ahead of next weekend's relegation play-off final against the Banner County.

5. Declan Hannon (Limerick)

Hannon struck over three points as the Shannonsiders completed the group stages with a hard fought six point victory over Laois at Kilmallock.

6. Tadhg De Burca (Waterford)

Ably assisted by Austin Gleeson and Philip Mahony, De Burca formed a formidable half-back line against the Model County.

7. Shane Durkin (Dublin)

The Ballyboden St Endas clubman was a stand out performer as Ger Cunningham's charges set up a last eight clash against Limerick.

8. Sean Ryan (Offaly)

Ryan and his Offaly team-mates will face Division 1A table toppers Tipperary in the business end of the league.

9. Andy Smith (Galway)

Smith secured plenty of possession for Anthony Cunningham's charges around the middle third of the field but they left Parnell Park empty handed.

10. Mark Schutte (Dublin)

Schutte's five point contribution helped swing the round 5 clash in Dublin's favour.

11. Tony Kelly (Clare)

If Clare are to dig themselves out of the hole they currently find themselves in, former Hurler of the Year Kelly will shoulder a lot of the responsibility in front of the posts.

12. Noel McGrath (Tipperary)

Six points from play from the Premier ace as Eamonn O'Shea's charges showed great character to overturn a 12 point deficit with just 15 minutes to go.

13. Seamus Callanan (Tipperary)

Along with McGrath, the Tipperary full-forward's finger prints was all over their comeback and he finished the game with 0-10 (five from frees) to his credit.

14. Kevin Kelly (Kilkenny)

Caused all sorts of problems for Clare full-back David McInerney and finished the relegation dress rehearsal with 1-9 (1-2 from play) to his name.

15. Patrick Horgan (Cork)

The ever reliable Horgan accumulated 2-8 (2-2 from open play) against Tipperary at Pairc Ui Rinn but his efforts proved to be in vain.
