Sigerson format old-fashioned - Moyna

Niall Moyna has called for a change to the Sigerson Cup format to guard against player burn-out.

The Monaghan man guided DCU to their third outright victory in the competition in six years last weekend but was concerned after his players were asked to play for 140 minutes on successive days against UCD and UCC in the semi-final and final respectively:

"It's a little bit old-fashioned, I think," the sports science guru notes in The Irish Independent. "Asking guys to come out and play two games in two days is like asking for trouble.

"And extra time as well, as we had here. That's tough, with the possibility of player getting injured, and missing the whole season.

"Now, it's great excitement, but if you're thinking about the players, and how we can progress this forward, Wednesday games is one possible solution. I'm not saying it's the only solution.

"I think they should play the whole thing over Wednesday afternoons, and the final on Wednesday night, under floodlights, at a venue where you going to get 4,000-5,000.

"This structure has served us well in the past, but when you talk about the whole thing of burnout, and players playing two games in two days, there are other ways. It would be much easier to calendar in Wednesday games. And it would make it much easier on the players as well."
