Anxious wait for Connolly

Dublin's Diarmuid Connolly
Diarmuid Connolly faces an anxious wait to see if he'll receive a retrospective suspension.

The Dublin attacker could be in hot water after TV footage showed his knees appearing to make contact with Kildare defender Ciaran Fitzpatrick's head during last weekend's O'Byrne Cup semi-final at Newbridge.

The incident sparked a confrontation between Kildare's James Kavanagh and Connolly, with both players picking up yellow cards. If it is confirmed that Connolly's booking was for his altercation with Kavanagh as opposed to the incident involving Fitzpatrick, then he could be handed a retrospective ban.

Leinster Council chiefs are waiting to view referee Eddie Kinsella's report before making any decision. The CCCC could hammer Connolly with an eight-week ban if he is charged.

Last summer, the St Vincent's player had a red card successfully rescinded after being sent off in the All-Ireland semi-final win over Donegal. Now he finds himself in a reverse situation.

Kildare could push for sanctions against the All-Ireland winner but it is understood that the Lilywhites are happy to let sleeping dogs lie.
