Walsh Cup: Laois have that extra bit

January 22, 2012

Laois hurling manager Teddy McCarthy
Laois handed Teddy McCarthy a winning start after they defeated DIT by 3-13 to 2-14 on Saturday.

The O'Moore County needed extra time to see off the challenge of the students at Rathdowney, but McCarthy will be pleased by the battling qualities shown by his charges.

The students used the strong breeze to their advantage in the first half and they had a seven-point lead by half time. Willie Dunphy had given Laois a great start with a goal early on, but DIT responded with two goals by Aodhan McInerney.

Dunphy his second to keep Laois in touch at half time and in the second half, they ground away at DIT's lead, but they needed an injury time point by Matthew Whelan to force extra time.

Dunphy was to the fore during that period and a brace of point by the corner forward helped Laois through to the semi final where they will meet Dublin.
