Leinster and Munster finals complete AIB senior campaigns

01 December 2009

All four AIB GAA senior provincial club hurling champions, plus two in football, have been decided, leaving Leinster and Munster football to be completed next Sunday.

Both finals will be played next Sunday as follows:

Leinster

Garrycastle (Westmeath) v Portlaoise (Laois), Tullamore.

Munster

Kerins O'Rahillys (Kerry) v Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare), Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

GARRYCASTLE v PORTLAOISE

Can Garrycastle prosper where no other Westmeath club have succeeded or will Portlaoise extend their lead at the top of the Leinster roll of honour? That's the question which awaits an answer in next Sunday's AIB Leinster GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final.

Tyrrellspass were the last Westmeath club to reach the final in 2007 but lost to St.Vincent's (Dublin). Garrycastle have seen off Clonguish and Ballyboden-St.Enda's in this Leinster campaign with the Dolan brothers, Dessie and Gary providing much of the attacking impetus while David O'Shaughnessy, Doran Harte and goalkeeper, Cathal Mullins bring vast experience further back.

Managed by former Galway hurling star, Anthony Cunningham, who won All-Ireland minor, U-21 and senior titles in the 1980s and who coached St. Brigid's (Roscommon) to provincial success in the 2006 Connacht senior club football final, Garrycastle are well set up as they attempt create history by becoming the first Westmeath club to land the title.

They face quite a challenge, however, against a Portlaoise side that easily beat Mattock Rangers, Seneschalstown and Clara (in a re-fixture) to advance to the final. They conceded just 0-2 against Mattock, 1-6 against Seneschalstown and 0-3 against Clara, underlining just how strong their defence is under the influence and leadership of Kevin Fitzpatrick.

Aidan Fennelly and Brian McCormack have done well further forward while the top scorers are Paul Cahillane who has bagged 4-8 and Barry Fitzgerald who has landed 1-11.

Portlaoise, who last won the title in 2004, have already won the Leinster championship six times, one clear of Eire Og (Carlow) so another success would put them further ahead and looking forward to an All-Ireland semi-final clash with Munster winners, Kilmurry-Ibrickane or Kerins O Rahillys or London champions, Tir Chonail Gaels in February.

KERINS O'RAHILLYS v KILMURRY-IBRICKANE

Kerins O'Rahillys are bidding to win the Munster title for first time (in fact this is their first appearance in the final) while Kilmurry-Ibrickane are seeking their second title, having won their first in 2004.

If Kerins O Rahillys win, they will become the seventh Kerry club to win the title, following in the footsteps of Dr.Crokes, Laune Rangers, Castleisland Desmonds, An Ghaeltacht, Austin Stacks and East Kerry. Other than Kilmurry-Ibrickane, Doonbeg are the only other Clare club to have won the crown.

With Kerry stars, Tommy Walsh and David Moran in Australia, Kerins O Rahillys' hand has been weakened but they are still quite a force as they showed in the semi-final when beating Moyle Rovers by two points. Walsh and Moran were aboard the side that won the first round game against Clonakilty but missed out on the semi-final.

Walsh's younger brother, Barry John and former Kerry star, Declan Quill are top scorers for the Tralee men.

Former Clare star, Odran O'Dwyer has been top scorer for Kilmurry-Ibrickane in the Munster campaign where they beat Dromcollogher-Broadford and Stradbally. Unusually, they neither scored nor conceded a goal in those two games. Kilmurry-Ibrickane will be appearing in the final for the fourth time, their most recent being last year when they lost by a point to Dromcollogher-Broadford.
