Farrell to hang up his boots

December 10, 2008
Dessie Farrell will bring the curtain down on his illustrious football career tonight when he lines out for Na Fianna against St. Mark's in a Dublin senior league relegation play-off game at Ballymun Kickhams. The GPA chief executive will play for the Mobhi Road outfit for the last time, having made his senior debut over two decades ago and led the club to unprecedented success in that time. Farrell won the three Dublin SFC medals with Na Fianna between 1999 and 2001, and also won a Leinster club medal in 1999 en route to an All-Ireland final defeat to Crossmaglen Rangers in March 2000. The 1995 All-Ireland winner and former All-Star corner forward retired from the inter-county scene in August 2005 following Dublin's All-Ireland quarter-final replay loss to Tyrone. He came on as a substitute for Conal Keaney on that occasion and scored the Dubs' only goal. It is also expected that tonight's game, which Na Fianna must win to preserve their top-flight status, will be former Mayo forward Kevin O'Neill's last for his adopted club. The 1993 All-Star transferred from his home club Knockmore in 2005 after training with Na Fianna for several years before that.
