Harrington retains chair in capital

December 09, 2008
Gerry Harrington was re-elected as Dublin county board chairman last night, defeating John Bailey by almost 100 votes. The Cork native, who is attached to the Naomh Mearnog club, had succeeded Bailey in the Dublin chair three years ago after the Cuala clubman had held the position for two previous spells over the course of a decade. Bailey was expected to run against Harrington two years ago, only to withdraw at the 11th hour, but the race went the full distance last night with Harrington winning by 161 votes to 66. Bailey, who is well known in political circles and was heavily involved in the redevelopment of Parnell Park during the 1990s, had claimed in recent weeks that it was time for "change" on the Dublin executive.
