Ryan rules out hurling return

Dublin's Shane Ryan
The appointment of Anthony Daly as Dublin hurling manager has failed to entice Shane Ryan back to the 'small ball' code. Currently in San Francisco as part of the football All-Stars tour, Ryan has warmly welcomed the Clare legend's arrival in the capital, while at the same time ruling himself out of any return to the inter-county hurling fold. Ryan, whose father Jack won an All-Ireland hurling medal with Tipperary in 1971, has represented Dublin hurlers at minor, under 21 and senior level, playing in Leinster finals at both minor and under 21 level. However, he had committed himself to football at inter-county level for the past seven seasons and has effectively ruled out any change of direction at this stage of his career to join up with Daly's squad. "At this stage of my career, it's hardly possible. But having someone like him (Daly), coming from an All-Ireland winning set-up in the recent past and thinking of what he can bring to the table, it's going to be a huge boost for hurling in Dublin." It remains to be seen if Daly will approach Conal Keaney with a view to rejoining the hurling panel, while he will also be doing his utmost to keep Kilmacud Crokes Ross O'Carroll on board amid reports that he is being watched closely by new Dublin football boss Pat Gilroy. O'Carroll, who has been touted as a possible solution to Dublin's full back problems, will line out for the Stillorgan club in Sunday's Leinster club football final against Rhode.
