Senior Ladies - Intermediate Championship Winners

A fantastic display of football from our senior ladies on Sunday afternoon saw them claim the Intermediate Championship title with a comprehensive 6 - 15 to 2 - 9 victory over Sarsfields.

The Shanes hit the front right from the opening whistle with Aimee Mackin firing over, quickly followed up with a fine Moya Feehan point. Sarsfields soon registered their first point of the game before great combination play between Aimee Mackin and Moya Feehan found Aoibheann Jones in space in front of the Sarsfields net and she made no mistake in netting his side's first goal. However, front the resulting kick-out Sarsfields replied with a goal of their own to leave just one between the sides. The Shanes tagged on a further four points with sisters Aimee and Blaithin Mackin getting two each to put their team five points to the good and thanks to a brilliant save from Katie Daly the Shanes remained in control. A point apiece from Aoibheann Jones and Aimee Mackin stretched the Shanes lead seven with Sarsfields reducing this to six with their second point of the half. However, the Shanes were totally dominant at this stage in the game and they pressed home their ascendancy with a goal from Aimee Mackin and a point from the boot of Blaithin Mackin before great work from Aoife McCoy set up Aoibheann Jones for her second and her side's third goal. Moya Feehan and Aimee Mackin combined again minutes later to present Aoife McCoy with the chance to add a fourth goal to her side's scoreline and the nippy forward made no mistake from close range. The Shanes led by sixteen points at this stage but two quick fire points from Sarsfields reduced the deficit to fourteen but a late first-half from Shanua Grey saw the Camlough girls lead by fifteen at the break, 4- 10 to 1 - 4.

The Shanes began the second-half in the same fashion as the first and registered an early goal with Aimee Mackin on target with the same player following up soon after with a well taken point. Three points on the trot kept the scoreboard ticking over for Sarsfields but the Shanes responded with points from Blaithin and Aimee Mackin before corner-forward Aoibheann Jones racked up a hat-trick of goals with another brilliant finish to the Sarsfields net. The sides then swapped pointed frees with Aimee Mackin on target for the Shanes before Shauna Grey fired over her side's final point of the contest, with Sarsfields getting  a goal and a point in the dying minutes to leave the final score 6 - 15 to 2 - 9 in favour of Shane O'Neills.

Louise Kenny, the Shane's captain, was presented the championship trophy after the game whilst Blaithin Mackin picked up the Player of the Match award.

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate all the players on their tremendous achievement and we can all now look forward to the Ulster Intermediate Championship. Well done also to the management team of Peter Lynch and Caoibhe Sloan and their backroom team of Angela Jones, Aoibhín Osborne, Martina Devlin and Eric Casey.
