Clonduff GAA Notes

May 23, 2016

RIP Jack Boothman and Joe McDonagh

Two former Presidents of the GAA passed away within the last couple of weeks - both well known to Clonduff People. In 1998 Jack officially opened the new Clonduff pitch and clubrooms and in 2012 that great orator Joe McDonagh delivered an inspirational speech, without a note, at Clonduff's 125 Celebratory Banquet. Ar dheis Dé go raibh ar a n-anamacha uasal.

Dalsey Mooney International Senior Sevens Tournament

The late Dalsey Mooney was a Clonduff and Down 'Great' - an outstanding athlete, an exceptional footballer and in a career cut short by injury, he earned himself the esteem and admiration of the entire Gaelic Family of Down.

He represented his county in all grades of football in the 1966/67 season - playing Senior, Junior, U21 and Minor Football for Down - indeed in that 1966 season he had the honour of captaining Down Minors to an All Ireland Minor Final (beaten by Mayo).

His contribution to Clonduff Club, again in all grades was immeasurable and as a Sevens player he had few if any equals. Those fortunate to witness his heroics in the 1966 Down Feis Sevens Final consider his display that day to be among the most iconic events ever witnessed in St Patrick's Park, Newcastle. When his playing days were over Dalsey remained a faithful servant of Clonduff.

Sadly Dalsey passed away in 2015 and to perpetuate his memory Clonduff GAA Club are running an annual International Seven-a-side Tournament commencing this year on Saturday 9th July.

This is a special Tournament in memory of a very special Clonduff footballer. His wife Eileen has sponsored the Dalsey Mooney Perpetual Trophy and we in the Clonduff Club will present prizes to the value of £3,000. A meal will be provided for the ten panel members and two mentors of each team.

Any Club interested in attending should email the Secretary [email protected] for further details.

FOOTBALL

SFL - Ballyholland 2-7 V clonduff 3-9

Clonduff emerged victorious in the Battle of the Yellas in Ballyholland on a cold, wet and windy Friday night that made underfoot conditions very difficult. The Clonduff team, without the county players had 8 x U21s and three other boys starting their first game of the season. In the early stages most of the play took place between the two 21s before Stephen McConville was brought down in the square and big brother Arthur coolly slotted home the resultant penalty. Clonduff, playing in the changed strip, were never headed in the game but it was hard-fought and hard-hitting with the young Clonduff side standing up very well in the intimidating atmosphere. They had wind advantage in the first half and led 3-4 to 2-2 at half time.

After the turnaround, the kickouts were difficult against the wind but the home side were unable to capitalise in the same way that Clonduff had done in the first half. Both sides scored five points to leave the final score Ballyholland 2-7 Clonduff 3-9.

Team and scorers: Paul Gribben, Shane McGreevy, Shane O'Hagan, Ruairi Lively, Brendan Britton, Rory Grant, Rory McQuaid, Patrick O'Hagan (0-4,3x50s), Jayme Gribben (0-1), Rían Branagan (1-0), Charlie Carr, Stephen McConville (0-1), Arthur McConville (2-2), Conor Óg O'Hagan (0-1); Subs used: Jason Brown, Finbarr McConville

PRFL - Clonduff II 1-9 v Mayobridge II 2-7

The weather changed dramatically on Sunday afternoon for the simultaneous PRFL and RFL games in Clonduff Park - there was heavy rain and hail throughout. The Yellas got off to a very bad start conceding two early goals and trailed by five at the break. The second half belonged to Clonduff and they clawed back to within a point but despite the lion's share of possession they just couldn't get that all important score to level or indeed win the game.

SD RFL Clonduff III 5-4 v St John Bosco II 5-8

Going into this game both teams were on level points having won two of their three games but The Yellas just fell short in the atrocious conditions in Clonduff Park (Top Field) on Sunday afternoon.
SD U14 FL Clonduff v Mayobridge
The boys had an impressive win over Mayobridge. In a high scoring game both teams played free flowing football. Mayobridge attacked hard and got a few soft scores but the Clonduff lads kept going and goals from Oran Wilson and Peter McEvoy left us only 2 pts down at half time. An early goal by Charlie Brown was the start of a great spell which resulted in a 1-6 score to no reply. Again Mayobridge came back to reduce the lead but a goal by Laurence Brannigan eased the pressure. Aaron Norris produced a brilliant display at full back and caught everything that went to him ably assisted by Conor McComisky and Jamie McDonald, and Padraig Morgan. Padraig Clancy and Laurence Brannigan went through a power of work in the middle with Oisin Tumilty, Oran Wilson, Charlie Brown and Will Kelly giving the 'Bridge defence a real headache. Final score 4-14 to 5-9.
Team: Darragh McAlinden, James Brannigan, Aaron Norris, Conor McComisky, Jamie McDonald, Laurence Brannigan, Thomas Woods, Padraig Clancy, Padraig Morgan, Oran Wilson, Charlie Brown, Will Kelly, Peter McEvoy, Oisin Tumilty, Jake Morgan; Subs used: Daire Lavery, Aaron Gribben, Ronan Matthews, Patrick Cowan; Other subs: Shane Close, Kieran Brannigan, Ben McGee, Aodhan quinn

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL

LGFA JUNIOR LEAGUE - Clonduff v Saval
This was a very tough game for the Clonduff girls and a cloudburst coming up to half time didn't help matters. They started the game brightly and got the first score of the night but the slick well-drilled Saval side picked off their scores with ease. Clonduff backs worked like Trojans but when the ball got into the forward line the Saval girls mopped most of the balls up. The Yellas were missing a number of regulars and will undoubtedly improve before the two teams meet in the Championship later in the year. Team: Shannon O'Reilly, Lizzie Barry, Brigid Quinn, Colleen McPolin, Erin Rafferty, Emma McGreevy, Roisin Mulholland, Joeleen Branagan, Amy Lowry, Paddi Fitzpatrick, Niamh Fitzpatrick, Aoife Brown, Martina Cunningham, Orla Gribben, Laura Taylor

U14 LGFA Carryduff v Clonduff

The U14 girls suffered the same fate on Sunday as their senior counterparts - heavily defeated by a very strong city side who seemed to find their scores easier to come by than Clonduff. However, they will regroup and put this down to experience.

U12 LGFA Clonduff v Castlewellan
The girls continued with their winning form with another great win against a strong and physical Castlewellan team. All 28 players that turned up got lots of game time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Keep up the hard work girls and well done. Hurling

U-14 Hurling League - Clonduff 5-4 v Ballela 5-5
The Young Clonduff side were defeated by a single point at home on Sunday morning. They played very well and their developing skills very evident - if they continue with their training they will progress even further. Team: Aaron Norris, Thomas Woods, Oisin Tumilty, Oran Wilson, Laurence Branagan, Padraig Morgan, Patrick Cowan, Padraig Clancy, Ben Magee, Joey O'Hare, Jake Morgan, Jayme McDonald, Will Kelly, Shane Close, Larry Lynch (injured)

U8/U10 Hurling Blitz

Clonduff's youngest Hurlers travelled over to Kilclief on Saturday morning for the monthly Hurling Development Blitz. The lads got plenty of game time and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

CAMOGIE

COME HURL WITH ME

A great turnout of adults for the third session of the Come Hurl with Me six week Programme held on Saturday morning. This was a very enjoyable active session that saw the young Camogs join the adults and 'train ' with them and on some occasions showing them how to actually do some of the skills. It's very true when they say form is temporary and class is permanent with some former players showing that they still have it ... this could also apply to some who never played and just showed their natural ability! Looking forward to next Saturday already!

U14 Camogie League Ben Dearg v Clonduff

The Clonduff girls put on a great exhibition of Camogie in Kilclief on Tuesday evening holding the hosts scoreless.

Congratulations to Clonduff Senior Player Paula Gribben who was selected to play on the Ulster Provincial Camogie team at the weekend - Paula is also the Down captain. Unfortunately Ulster were beaten by Connaught
