James McCartan is the new Down minor football manager.

The Burren clubman, who managed the seniors from 2010 to '14 - they reached the All-Ireland final in his first year at the helm - takes over from Shane Mulholland, whose term ended in controversial circumstances after this year's campaign. McCartan had been linked with a return to the still unfilled senior post until declaring it was "someone else's turn" to walk the line for the Mourne men.

During his illustrious playing career, 'Wee James' won an All-Ireland minor medal with Down in 1987 before going on to add All-Ireland senior honours in 1991 and '94.

According to the Irish News, former Down captain Ambrose Rogers will be one of McCartan's selectors.
