Down manager Jim McCorry believes that they have unearthed a host of new players during the Dr McKenna Cup.

The Mourne men's interest in the early season competition came to an end following their win over Ulster University last Wednesday, but McCorry feels that he has learned a lot from those opening three games.

"We had six debutants in the opening match, four more in Monaghan and two more against UUJ and as well as that Conor Garvey and Peter Turley came back in after injury," McCorry told the Mourne Observer.

"There was a lack of understanding the first day but with a new group of players and a new management set-up you are always going to get that.

"Things are never going to happen immediately but we learned from that and worked hard at training, we are a work in progress."
