Kilcoo GAC Notes

October 20, 2014

On Saturday our under 12 camogs visited Croke Park for the now annual Caman to Croker event. A total of 64 under 12 camogie teams from around Ireland took part in this event which involved them taking the guided tour of Croke Park and then competing on the halloed turf. A large contingent of Kilcoo supporters and parents attended and watched with pride as our young girls participated at the very highest level. All done really well and were a credit to their club and their families.
On Sunday our seniors played Clontibret in the Ulster Senior Club Championship. This was always going to be a tough affair as the Clontibret team was laced with stars, many of whom had played for the Monaghan Senior team, either now or in the recent past. From the throw in it became apparent that this team had travelled to Pairc Esler on a mission and produced a tough brand of football and with their defensive set up it was clear that the Kilcoo forwards would find it difficult to build up their running game. The game see sawed one way and then the other and with one minute left of added time Clontibret struck their killer blow with a pass across the box fisted to the Kilcoo net by Dessie moan. This late blow left the Kilcoo lads no time to regroup and was the cruellest way to lose a game which it looked like they had sown up. It was indeed a very cruel way to lose a game but whilst the our players and supporters will examine this game and look on it as perhaps one we could have won the truth is that this team has risen to be the bench mark that others are aspiring to and is the very best in Down. They have delivered the last three championships in a row and this is as a result of the hard work and personal sacrifice that each and every one of them makes. Training 2 and 3 nights a week, gym work on their nights of, self imposed drinks ban, disciplined diets. That's only some of the stuff these lads do. We're sorry you couldn't have pushed on further this year, but we're very proud of you all and we know you'll take the winter rest and be back stronger next year.
Of course Sunday's defeat meant that Jim McCorry now moves on to the Down senior post and we in Kilcoo wish him the very best of luck in his new role. We are all only too aware of the debt of gratitude that we owe him and we acknowledge this. We have enjoyed unparalleled success during his tenure and we thank him and Mark Copeland and Paddy Murray and Sean Michael Johnston.
Thanks also to the entire backroom staff, but mostly to the players. Bring on 2015 #UTM
