McCorry coy about Down vacancy

Jim McCorry has refused to say if he is interested in succeeding James McCartan as Down football manager.

The Armagh native, who is currently in charge of reigning county champions Kilcoo, has been linked to the vacancy along with former Crossmaglen All-Ireland winning manager Tony McEntee and Niall Moyna, who was assistant to McCartan for the past two seasons.

"It's not something that I have given any thought to, to be honest, because we are in full championship preparation mode with Kilcoo," McCorry is quoted in the Irish News.

"I did not know that James was actually planning to stand down because last year a lot of people were saying that might be James' last year. But I just thought it was the same pattern and that he was taking a bit of a break and a well-deserved break, but it is not something that I have given any thought to at all.

"It really is a full-time job for anybody to do and James has worked very hard with that squad. He has brought in a lot of new players and, in my view, he has been very, very unlucky not to have got some major silverware during his tenure there."

Down county board chiefs are eager to have the position filled "sooner rather than later".
