Aughlisnafin club notes

April 16, 2012
The seniors were defeated 0-14 to 0-6 away to Bredagh last Monday night. The recent coaching session in Annsborough delivered by Armagh and Ireland Rules captain Ciaran McKeever paid dividends with the lads workrate and tackling holding the South Belfast club to 6 points at the short whistle. Halt time Bredagh 0-6 Aughlisnafin 0-3. The Fin points coming from Paul Flanagan (2) and Collie McVeigh. McVeigh saw another goal bound effort deflected wide which if it had went in it would have put the Fin ahead. After the interval the Fin continued to work hard and repelled numerous Bredagh attacks and Maurice McClean made a superb save in his determination to keep a clean sheet. As the second period went on Bredagh kept the scoreboard ticking over and when the Fin lost their captain Paul Flanagan to injury they pulled clear to win by 8 points at the end. Paul Flanagan, Patrick Flanagan and McVeigh getting the second half points. The defence were superb with McClean, Francie Boden, James Brannigan, Anthonty Quinn and Rory McMullan all starring. In midfield Donagh Steele and Flanagan before he was forced off matched their opponents. Up front Chris Doran at half forward gave Owen Costello an uncomfortable evening and Collie McVeigh impressed in the full forward berth. This fixture last season saw Bredagh score 6-22. While the lads still lost they showed tremendous workrate and intensity and showed that they are narrowing the gap between themselves and the top teams in the divsion.

The seniors game against Ballykinlar was not played last Friday evening and is now postponed until Thursday 3rd May. However the Fin were pleased to be able to host Killyleagh for their first senior game for five years when they played a hastily arranged challenge game in Annsborough. The blues gave a very good account of themselves and made the Fin work hard for their win. It is good to see the club reviving its fortunes and the Fin were only too glad to lend a hand. It was only 6 years ago that the Fin were in a similar place. Thanks Ciaran Keenan the manager of Killyleagh for agreeing to play the match at short notice and the club wish Killyleagh the very best for the future.

The Ladies match against St John Bosco did not take place due to the non-appearance of a referee.

At the time of going to press the seniors result against St Pauls was not known.

The club hosted the first East Down u10s Blitz of the new season with Bight, Bredagh and Kilclief the visiting teams. Each club played three games over and hour and a half in glorious sunshine. There were nearly 60 players and everyone got game time in several positions and in keeping with the spirit of Go Games there were no results kept meaning all the teams were winners on the day. Thanks to everyone who helped out and came long to watch the stars of the future. Fin squad : M Croskery, S Croskery, C Murphy, C Steen, A Flanagan, C Matthews, O McCartan, O Maguire, D Murphy, C King, R Clarke, J Keenan, R Crilly, M Quinn, A Quinn, R Tweedie, N King, C Ward.

The club held a pub quiz last Friday night in Mulhollands Bar which was great craic and thanks to Shannan McCavery and Francie Boden for organising it.
