Five points from Michael McHugh helped Monaghan to eclipse South Down and collect their first two points in Division Four today at Ballela.

There was nothing to separate these sides in the first-half, as they shared 0-7 each after 35 minutes, but Monaghan's start to the second period would be crucial.

McHugh, Brian McGuigan and Ronan Meegan all registered quick points after the restart for the Farney men, before Sean Leonard and McHugh extended their lead even further.

South Down looked for a way back, but the dismissals of Michael Cunningham and Aiden Brown hindered their chances, while Monaghan weren't made to rue the sending-off of James Connolly, as they held out for the win. Tweet
