Kilcoo storm to league title
November 28, 2008
Kilcoo 3-14
Mayobridge 1-7
Kilcoo pulled off a massive upset against Mayobridge last Friday evening to capture the Down Division One league title at Pairc Esler.
The early signs were ominous for the winners through when Down ace forward Benny Coulter sent in Conor Garvey for the game's opening goal, but Kilcoo restored some parody through the points of Gerard McEvoy and Paul Devlin.
On the stroke of half-time it looked as though all Kilcoo's good work had been undone though when Coulter was brought down in the square for a penalty, but 'keeper James Kane denied Cathal Magee and it was Kilcoo who went in at the break with a 0-7 to 1-3 lead.
A mistake at the back from the senior champions early in the restart allowed Alphonsus McEvoy to net his side into a four-point lead, which rocked Mayobridge so much so that they would conceded moments later when Conor Laverty slipped Phelim McGreevey through and the substitute made no mistake.
From there there was simply no coming back for the men from the 'Bridge and when Laverty rattled in Kilcoo's third goal nearing full-time the celebrations were well a truly sparked in Newry.
