Three for Saul in Down Scór na nÓg Final
November 25, 2008
With wins in Instrumental Music, Ballad Group and Novelty Acts, St Patrick's GAA club from Saul was by far the most successful club at the county Down finals of Scór na nÓg in Carryduff on Sunday last.
The rest of the competitions were shared between five different clubs with the first decision of the night going to the Mayobridge trio of Cormac Linden, Gareth Rooney and Seámus McGeough who narrowly won through in the quiz over neighbouring Clonduff in second place.
The Ceili Dancing title went to Ballyholland dancing the 'Three Tunes'; Rostrevor's Anne Marie Mulholland won the Solo Singing competition before Saul won the Instrumental Music title, the first in their 'hat trick' of success.
Recitation went to young Declan Boyle from the St Michael's Club and to finish off the first half of the show, Saul were crowned victors in the Ballad Group section of the competitions and win the second leg of their hat trick.
The second half of the programme started with Saul annexing the Novelty Act title before Warrenpoint won through in the Set Dancing competition; this was just before Mayobridge's win in the Quiz.
The winners now go through to compete against the winners from Antrim and Armagh in the Ulster semi final in Glengormley on Friday 12th December.
Guests of honour at the finals included Past President of the GAA, Paddy McFlynn; Kevin Bell, County chairman; Michael Greenan, Chairman of Coiste Scór Uladh; and prominent members of the Down divisional and County boards.
