Tyrone, Monaghan and Marys provide McKenna opposition

November 21, 2008
Holders Down have been pitted in the same group as All-Ireland champions Tyrone, Monaghan and St Marys for the 2009 McKenna Cup. The Mourne men were also in the same section as the O'Neill County last year and lost their opener to Mickey Harte's charges before going on to win the province's subsidiary competition. Tyrone became familiar rivals as the year progressed and Ross Carr's men exacted revenge when beating them in a first-round Ulster SFC replay, with Tyrone of course bouncing back to claim the Sam Maguire via the qualifiers. The McKenna Cup starts in early January and Down's home games are expected to be played under lights at the resplendent Pairc Esler.
