Scór as Strong as Ever!

The East Down Final of Scór was held in St. Michaels Hall, Finnis on Sunday afternoon and this saw a packed hall of over 350 audience turn out to watch 4 hours of top talent from East Down. This year is the 40th Anniversary of Scór and East Down marked this in a special way by sending out formal invitations to special guest as well as producing an original souvenir programme for everyone in the audience kindly provided by Plus 2 Print, Downpatrick. Flower arrangements and stage decorations were also provided by Flowers by Tracey As part of the 40th celebrations former County Chairman and Ulster Scór Secretary, Harry McEvoy presented the 16 clubs from East Down who took part in Scór na nÓg with a special certificate recognising the effort that each club had put in. The Chairman of East Down Scór Brian Kennedy appealed to those clubs who failed to turn out to make a special effort to get a team ready in time for Scór Sinsear which will be starting in the New Year. Saul proved to be the strongest Club in East Down on this the 40th year in Scór na nÓg winning two titles and coming runner up in two spots. Loughinisland and Kilcoo each have three of their entrants taking to the stage in the County Final.    Champions in Celi Dancing were a team that the East Down Scór board are glad to see back, Ballycran. Teconnaught also proved strong and took the runner up spot. Solo Singing was a heavily contested competition with 5 excellent performances. The two who progressed to the next round were Castlewellan's Orla McCrickard with her traditional rendition of Erín Gra Mo Chroí along with Downpatrick's talented male vocalist, Matthew Campbell. Instrumental Music had the audience's toes tapping and the winners were Saul with their Cat's Meow Jig and Sully's Reel with Darragh Cross taking the second place to get through to the County Final. The recitation/storytelling section saw 5 lively competitors ranging from aged 8 to 16 and going through was Kilcoo's Ryan Devlin with Saul's Roisin Sloan is second place with her Message from St. Patrick. The hotly contested ballad group competition proved strong with Loughinisland taking the top spot with Saul coming in in second place. Before the interval, Guest of Honor Paddy McFlynn, Down County President and former GAA President, graced the stage to cut the 40th Anniversary Cake provided by Dromara GAC.   The interval started with a lively performance from last year's All Ireland Finalists in the Instrumental Section, Castlewellan. The next competition was novelty act and Saul took the Glory here with their Make a Wish with their neighbours Downpatrick taking the second spot with the story of Finn McCool. Three Set Dancing teams progressed through to the next round to make up a full programme. The three teams were Kilcoo CLG, Kilcoo Camogie and Loughinisland respectively. The atmosphere was so immense at one stage in the hall that this resulted in a power cut for about 4 minutes but was quickly fixed by Eugene O'Hare to the relief of the young competitiors who were anxious to get on stage. The Quiz was a battle of the brains between the clubs which saw Bredagh take the East Down title and last year's Ulster Finalists, Loughinisland come in in 2nd place.   The East Down Scór Board would like to thank Dromara for their provisions last Sunday evening. They also would like to wish all their competitors the best of luck in the County Final which will take place in St. Joseph's Hall, Carryduff on Sunday 23rd November commencing at 5pm.
