Gaels edge a thriller with Convoy by a point
The senior ladies took centre stage in Traigh a Locha on Saturday evening as they hosted Convoy in a division 2 league encounter. The ladies haven't had an outing in a few weeks and were eagerly awaiting this fixture.
The game began at a high pace, and it was end to end for its entirety. St Mary's dominated possession and territory during the opening exchanges but were guilty of some poor shooting and it was to be Fanad in the lead by two points to one after ten minutes. Siobhán Coyle on target twice from play for the hosts. Fanad settled quicker after the opening exchanges and were dominant in the middle third with Orla Mc Gonigle and Eiméar Gibbons winning a lot of possession in midfield. The Gaels hit two quick fire goals, first from Siobhán Coyle and secondly from Caoimhe Walsh after she surged through the middle to set up her own chance. Some good interplay from sisters, Niamh and Michelle Mc Devitt lead to a fine score from Michelle in the 19th minute. Fanad had built up a commanding eight point lead and Siobhán Coyle duly added her second goal of the night a minute later to extend it further. That seemed to awaken Convoy and by the time the whistle blew for half time they were very much back in the contest. They hit a point from play in the 25th minute and were awarded a dubious penalty a minute later where the Convoy forward seemed to slip but a foul was adjudged to have taken place. The penalty was emphatically finished to the top corner of the net leaving Rosheen Mc Ginley with absolutely no chance in the Fanad goal to reduce the arrears to seven points. They got their third score in as many minutes with a great point from distance a minute later. The scores kept coming. Convoy pressed high on the Fanad kick out but the Gaels worked the ball out as far as Caoimhe Walsh who went on a trademark run which ended with the ball hitting the net. That left Fanad 4:03 to 1:03 ahead and the Convoy onslaught had been stopped, or so it seemed. Within a minute, Convoy hit two goals and when they added a further point in the 30th minute there was only two points between the teams. The five minutes of madness wasn't yet over as Eibhlín Shiels buried the ball to the back of the Convoy net with the final play of the half to send Fanad in leading by 5:03 to Convoy's 3:04.
The second half began as the first had ended with both teams committing strongly to attack. Lauren Carr tagged on the first score of the half after she battled her way through the Convoy defence. Convoy responded and made their way through for their fourth goal in the third minute to reduce the arrears to three points. Fanad playing with the wind at their backs showed real composure in the next five minutes, with Siobhán Coyle kicking four shots, three of those finding the target. Aisling Mc Devitt was proving influential during this period supplying Siobhán with possession for her scores. Convoy responded with a surging run through the heart of the Fanad defence but Rosheen Mc Ginley denied them a goal with a brilliant point blank stop. It was now end to end and this was aided by the referee's free flowing approach to the game. Eiméar Gibbons burst through a gap in the Convoy defence moments later but saw her shot drop to the left and wide. Lauren Carr followed up that effort with a point but the tide turned in Convoy's favour after that. Convoy had the next five attacks in scored a goal and two points to make it a two point game with ten minutes remaining. The game as it had throughout, continued to ebb and flow and Fanad burst forward. In a great sweeping move involving Caoimhe Walsh, Orlaigh Carr and Lauren Carr a goal opportunity was created for Aisling Mc Devitt who buried the ball to the bottom corner. Convoy replied instantly with a goal of their own to leave the score Fanad 6:08 Convoy 6:06. Convoy piled on the pressure but Fanad defended with purpose with the full back line of Eimear Mc Conigley, Maggie Friel and Michelle Doherty battling hard with a dangerous Convoy full forward line. They withstood five minutes of intense pressure from Convoy before breaking forward and Lauren Carr ended the move with a fine score. Fanad tried desperately to kick an insurance score but were unlucky as they hit the post twice in a minute. With the game entering injury time Convoy pushed forward and belted a hopeful ball into the square. It was dropped in the Fanad defence and Convoy punished to draw level. The game was now there for either team to win. Orla Mc Gonigle battled to win possession in her own half and with some good interplay the Gaels worked the ball up the field and Convoy committed a foul on the 45. Fanad worked it short and and won another free 30 meters from goal. Siobhán Coyle stepped up and kicked her sixth point of the game. Convoy had two minutes to reply but Fanad defended with vigour, lead by full back Michelle Doherty and managed to see out the game. Full time score: Gaeil Fhánada 6:10 (28) St Mary's Convoy 7:6 (27).
It was a great performance from both teams with plenty attacking flair on show. Manager John Mc Conigley will be delighted with the heart and work rate shown by his team. Next up is a fixture with Milford.

Downings take derby day spoils
Downings 1-11
Gaeil Fhánada 0-9
Downings emerged victorious to pick up their second win of the season in a hard hitting but entertaining encounter played in a breezy Downings on Wednesday evening. Lorcan Connor was the influential player over the hour and was involved in everything good about the Downings side. For Fanad, Seami Nanny Friel battled gamely throughout.
Fanad struck first blood, a pin point pass from Frank Sweeney picked out Seami Nanny who drilled over after just 30 seconds. Fanad were then dealt a huge blow, full back Ryan McGonigle took a pass from Oisin Shiels and as he tried to evade a big hit from Downings midfielder Shane Boyce, his leg planted in the ground while his momentum took him forward. Results have since confirmed that Ryan has dislocated his kneecap and fractured his knee which is very disappointing given he is only back from minor knee surgery.
Downings hit the next score of the game from a Connor free to tie up the scores but Fanad then had their best patch of the game, hitting five unanswered scores and using the breeze to their advantage. Oisin Shiels floated over from wide on the left before Seami Nanny launched over a free from 50m. Michael Sweeney also drove over from 45m before Seami Nanny again split the posts with two frees to make in 0-6 to 0-1 in Fanad's favor. Credit to Downings who rallied and really upped the tempo, scoring four points on the bounce against a strong breeze. Ben McBride tapped over before James Lee McBride also got in on the act with a rather fortuitous point. Connor pointed two frees to leave it a one point game before Seami Nanny pointed from distance after James Gallagher was fouled. The last action of the half belonged to Connor and Downings as his close range free left the margin to a point after Oisin Boyce was fouled.
HT: Downings 0-6, Gaeil Fhánada 0-7
The first 10 minutes of the second half were dull, Fanad played a possession game that Downings didn't really pressure and there was only one score to show, a Michael Sweeney point after great work from Shaun McElwaine and Seami Nanny. Downings responded with a Connor free before Connor again tied up the game with another free after Gary Ban was fouled. A huge turning point came 15 minutes into the second half, Michael Sweeney won a kickout and drove forward to the Downings 13m line. A moment of indecision allowed Kevin Doherty to get his fingertips to the ball and danger was cleared. From the resulting attack, Downings won a penalty and Fanad had the tough tackling Frank Sweeney black carded for his foul on Gary Ban. Connor's penalty smashed the crossbar and went over for a point. Fanad did respond through Sweeney after an error from Connor Shiels but Downings responded in clinical fashion. Firstly, Connor pointed from wide on the left before they hit their goal. Eoghan Carr fumbled on the Downings '45, Ben McNutt drove forward and executed a fine ball into Connor who turned Kevin McGonigle. It was two on one now and the ball was slipped to Gary Ban who tapped home to give Downings a four point lead. Fanad huffed and puffed but couldn't break down a resilient Downings defence. Oisin Boyce swiveled and arrowed a beauty over to push the cushion out to five points as the clock entered injury time. Fanad did have time to fashion a goal chance, a pin point pass from Oisin Shiels found Sweeney on the Downings 13 yard line, but his weak shot went wide of the post when he really should have been doing better. With that, Downings kept possession for the final minute to close out a good win for the Rosguill men.
Overall, it was a fair game between two evenly matched sides, the ultimate difference being Downings' taking their goal chance while Fanad fluffed both efforts that fell their way. Aidan will be more encouraged from the performance but knows there is still a lot of work to do as the season enters a crucial period. Fanad still stay near the top of the table despite two poor losses, but they do have some challenging games upcoming, both away, to Burt and league leaders St. Nauls.

Reserves pipped by Na Dúnaibh (Reserves)
Downings won the battle of the reserve teams on their own patch last Wedbesday evening, emerging victorious by a single point. It was a game of two halves where the men from the Ros Goill peninsula were superior in the first period, with Gaeil Fhánada dominating the second but unable to turn the first half deficit!
Downings played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and started the stronger. They registered their first score score in the second minute. Stephen Mc Gonigle responded in the sixth minute but a goal and a point within the next two minutes would ultimately prove decisive for the home team as it gave them a cushion which they could keep until the end. The goal came from a defensive mix up which Downings capitalised on. They tagged on a point to lead by four in the tenth minute. Patsy Friel added Fanad's second in the 13th minute and Shaun Mc Govern reduced the deficit to two points three minutes later. Two bad Gaels wides were punished as Downings hit the next two points and had their four point lead intact by the twentieth minute. They also hit a couple of wides during that period before Shaun Mc Govern hit his second of the game in the 25th minute. Downings were to have the final say of the first half with another point. Half time score: Gaeil Fhánada 0:04 Na Dúnaibh 1:05.
Fanad now playing with the breeze began the second half in a brighter fashion. Davitt Walsh was introduced at half time and made an immediate impact. He almost capitalised on a poor bit of Downings defending but saw his shot at goal brilliantly blocked by the opposition corner back on the goal line. He struck a point from range two minutes later to reduce the Downings lead. Cathal Martin added a score a minute later. He took possession on his own 45 and after a surging solo run into Downings territory, he slotted over a nice point. Downings responded immediately with a score from midfielder Martin Mc Bride. Fanad hit four wides in a row from the next four attacks before an impressive Patsy Friel point left a two point game midway through the second half. Another couple of poor wides were registered before Paul Coyle reduced the Downings lead to a point in the 49th minute. The Gaels were completely dominant at this stage but were to be undone by a rare Downings forage forward with Mc Bride again registering another Downings score. Fanad couldn't break down the strong Downings rearguard for the remainder of the game and when Paul Coyle knocked over a long range free, it proved to be the final action of the game. Gaeil Fhánada 0:09 Na Dúnaibh 1:07.
James Martin will be disappointed with this result but it can't be denied that Downings managed the game impressively in putting up a lead while playing with the wind and defending ferociously in the second half. Fanad however, will be disappointed with their 13 wides and their inability to take the goal chances that presented themselves and that is something they will need to get right for their next outing.
Séamus Mc Ateer, Bernard Martin, Shaun Mc Elwaine, Dan Little, Séamus Coyle, Cathal Martin (0:01),Shaun Coyle, Paddy Mc Ateer, Paul Coyle (0:02), Conor Mc Fadden, Shaun Mc Govern (0:02), Patsy Friel (0:02), Stephen Mc Gonigle (0:01), Alan Mc Ateer, Rudi Feenstra. Congratulations Ken & Emma
Congratulations to Ken Dempsey and his wife Emma on the birth of their daughter Amelia Rose. Ken moved to the Gaels in 2010 and is currently playing for our reserve team as well as being part or the reserve management team. A shrewd move from Dempsey which guarantees him the start each week as well as free kick and penalty duty. We'd like to congratulate Ken, Emma and Amelia Rose and wish them all the best in the future.

Get well soon Ryan!
We'd like to wish Ryan 'Red Bird' McGonigle a speedy recovery after a nasty injury sustained in this evening's defeat to Downings. Ryan badly jarred his knee and could face a lengthy time on the sideline. Ryan is one of the most naturally talented players we have so his absence on the field will be felt. We'd also like to thank physio Paul Coyle(Downings) who helped Ryan after the injury. Get well soon Ryan.

School Sports Day 2017
Well done to everyone who braved the elements today for the School Sports Day. Nobody allowed the rain to dampen our spirits. A big shout out to Bridie Doherty and Margaretta McConigley who put in a huge amount of work both today and beforehand to ensure that everything ran like clockwork. There's no allowing for the weather, but we have 300 wet but happy children gone home with their medals for participation.
Also a big thank you to our GAA Schools coach, Manus Friel, for playing his part today. Great work was done by our young secondary school student's, parents who volunteered on the day, teachers and SNA's from the schools as well as our resident photographer Michael Doherty and our own club volunteers who did massive work in the pouring rain.

A big thank you must go to Swilly Mulroy Credit Union for their sponsorship. A full photo album of the day's events is now on our Facebook page.
