"It just tailed at the last second"

Paddy McBrearty has put the debate over whether or not Donegal should have had a replay to bed by admitting his last-gasp attempt for an equalising point against Monaghan was wide.

Donegal supporters behind the goal were convinced that the ball was inside the post, but the effort was waved wide by the umpires and Monaghan were duly crowned Ulster champions for a 16th time.

"I thought it was over and it was looking like it was going over, but it just tailed at the last second. One of those ones you might not relish looking at," the Kilcar attacker is quoted in the Irish News.

Donegal manager Rory Gallagher wasn't making an issue over the near-miss either.

"It was a chance that Patrick would normally take, and the focus will be on the last opportunity, but we did have a number of chances before that," he pointed out.

In such a tight game, Gallagher was left to rue Donegal's tally of 15 wides.

"In the first half we just couldn't match Monaghan's intensity and our performance wasn't good enough. There wasn't a whole lot wrong with our second half.

"There wasn't a whole lot wrong with our second half. There was very little in it, we had the majority of possession in the second half but we didn't put the chances away."
