Early Cup exit no bad thing, says McGlynn

Donegal All Star Frank McGlynn

Frank McGlynn says Donegal's failure to qualify for the latter stages of the McKenna Cup was a "blessing in disguise".

Donegal bowed out of the pre-season competition in Ballyshannon last Sunday despite beating Fermanagh by a point, but McGlynn wasn't overly disappointed as the Ulster champions turn their thoughts to facing Derry in their first game back in Division 1 of the Allianz League on Sunday week.

"We were very pleased with the first half performance and going in with a seven-point lead," the All-Ireland winning defender told the Donegal Democrat.

"But the second half did not go so well and we certainly have a lot of things to work on after that second half performance. In fairness to Fermanagh, they have more work done than us and were fitter and finished strong.

"They upped their performance in the second half and indeed but for some wayward shooting they could have easily left with the victory.

"Unfortunately, we did not qualify for the semi-final, but given the tight schedule of games and the league only two weeks away, it may have been a blessing in disguise that we did not qualify for the semi-final.

"After the second half we have plenty to work on so it is a matter of going away and preparing for the start of the league and Derry in Ballybofey."
