Murphy in fitness race

Donegal's Michael Murphy
Michael Murphy is in a race against time to be fit for Donegal's Ulster SFC opener against Cavan on May 20.

The full forward underwent surgery after he damaged lateral knee ligaments in last month's Allianz Football League defeat to Dublin, and while he has been making good progress since then, his participation in the Kingspan Breffni Park encounter remains in doubt.

"The doctors are happy with his progress and he is healing well, but he has to go back (to the Dublin Sports Clinic in Santry) in two weeks for a further check-up," Donegal manager Jim McGuinness explained to the Irish News.

"At this stage, it is far too early to say if he will be fit for the Cavan match or not."

McGuinness is confident that defenders Karl Lacey and Declan Walsh will make quick recoveries from injuries they picked up on club duty last weekend, and that midfielder Neil Gallagher will return to training soon after suffering an Achilles tendon injury in the final round of the league against Armagh.
