McKenna Cup: McGourty-inspired UUJ shock Donegal

January 09, 2012
UUJ 0-11
Donegal 0-9

Ulster champions Donegal suffered a surprise defeat to University of Ulster, Jordanstown in Letterkenny.

Antrim star CJ McGourty scored four late points to tip the balance in the students' favour at the end of what had been a close contest throughout. Donegal, who have followed Dublin's lead by holding early morning training sessions, were left to rue two missed goal chances in the second half.

The sides were level five times in the first half with Ciaran Clarke in fine form for UUJ and Dermot 'Brick' Molloy impressing at the opposite end for Donegal. The introduction of teenage star Patrick McBrearty sparked Donegal into life on the restart and they had opened up a two-point lead before McGourty took centre stage in the final quarter.

Donegal's misery was compounded by the dismissal of Neil Gallagher in the closing minutes on a second yellow card.
