Donegal play Aran Islands on Ceist GAA

December 14, 2011
Donegal's Na Rossa will be hoping to do their bit for the Mainland when they face overseas opposition in the shape of the Aran Islands in an All-Ireland semi-final on Wednesday night's Ceist GAA le Hector semi-final on TG4.

Mayo side Kiltane are already through to the final and Ódhran Ó Gallachoir from Na Rossa is confident of preventing an all-Connacht decider on December 21st.

Ó Gallachoir will be hoping for double delight on Wednesday, as a teacher in Firhouse, Dublin he will manage the Girls Football team in a Cumann na mBunscol final in Croke Park earlier in the day.

"It would be fantastic to win both matches on the same day," he said. "We are looking forward to it. Obviously it is going to be a big semi-final for us.

"We are delighted to get this far. We never thought at the beginning that we would make it this far.

"We just wanted to represent the club, the area and Donegal in this competition.

"We are very, very happy to get to the semi-final and we are going to do our best in it anyway. Hopefully we can do the whole county proud."

Ó Gallachoir is hoping that Na Rossa can make amends for Donegal's All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Dublin at Croke Park earlier this year.

"I think we left it behind against Dublin that day and I hope the girls from the school don't leave it behind them on Wednesday either," he said.

"Dublin went from strength-to-strength after that game, and hopefully we won't leave it behind us in the semi-final of Ceist GAA le Hector.

"We have done our best so far, we have done a bit of research and hopefully it will see us through.

"It's going to be a tough contest against the Aran Islands. They were impressive in the first two rounds thus far. We have been keeping an eye out for them and they have a good knowledge of all things GAA."

Aran Islands team member Mairtín Ó Goill knows that his side will be up against it this Wednesday night.

"They are a very good team," he said.

"I'm sure they will have good experience, they have come this far so they can't be a bad team."

The UL student says that the 'Ceist GAA le Hector' programme has been great for propelling the Aran Islands into the limelight.

"It is very good for the club to get our reputation up," he said.

"There are a lot of people watching the programme at the moment, even if they don't have Irish.

"They are very interested in it and the interest in the club is increasing also."

Na Rossa or Oileann Árainn will meet Mayo side Kiltane in the final, to battle it out for a Training weekend at the renowned Carton House in Maynooth, Co. Kildare under the watchful eye of former Meath and International Rules manager Sean Boylan.

If you miss it a repeat of Na Rossa against Oileann Árainn will go out on TG4 on Sunday next at 8.30pm.

The final will be broadcast on Wednesday December 21st also with an 8.30pm throw-in on TG4.

The programme is in its second series and has the official endorsement of the GAA and is broadcast every Wednesday night at 8.30pm with a repeat showing on Sunday evenings.

16 clubs set out on the road to Ceist GAA honours in 2011, with Mayo, Clare, Sligo, Galway, Tipperary, Kerry, Dublin, Armagh, Wicklow, Galway, Down, Waterford, Donegal and Cork represented.
