Inishowen club notes

Inishowen Round Up
It was another fantastic day for the peninsula's youngest gaels on Saturday morning, when scores of children participated in the U8 Go Games Finals Day in Connolly Park. It was an enjoyable day out for all the youngsters, coaches and parents who made the journey. Many thanks to Malin GAA club for their hospitality and organisation, and to everybody who helped to make it a great success.
At adult level, there was good wins for Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin and Burt in the Junior A championship. Naomh Padraig survived an early scare at Ture before going on to control the game against Convoy. The Inishowen side entered the game with a first leg advantage, and despite conceding a goal early on, they fought back to secure the passage to the semi-finals. In the other championship game, Burt will now fancy themselves to progress to the next round after leaving Dunkineely with a hard fought win over Naomh Ultan. The 2nd leg will be played in Hibernian Park in a fortnight's time. Burt also resumed activities in the league last week, with a comfortable victory over St Eunans. Their reserve football team lost a few days later to the same opposition.
Malin remain top of Division 2 after their trip to Kilcar was fruitful, holding the home side to a draw and finding favourable results in the division's other league games. All three Inishowen sides in Division 3 had games over the weekend but only Urris secured the two league points. Urris' seven point victory over Milford leapfrogged them over neighbours Carndonagh, who lost to Annagry club Naomh Mhuire. There's still a handful of games left and who knows where a couple of wins can leave a club. Moville made the long trek to Glencolmcille on Saturday against league leaders Naomh Columba but lost by four points.

The U16 squad had a very useful workout against Donegal South in Burt on Sunday
morning. Minus players through injury and holidays, Inishowen played well against a
strong Donegal squad who have been training steady over the last few months.
The game was played with a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch. Donegal went ahead 30 seconds of the start but Inishowen hit back. Conor Mc Cormick scored 1-1
in the first 10 mins thanks to the hard working pair of Peter Mc Laughlin and Conor Harkin who were
winning nearly all the kickouts at midfield. Harkin scored another goal on 11 mins to put Inishowen
in front. This proved to be the last score for the Inishowen men in the first half. Donegal
dominated the rest of the half scoring 2-3, making good use of the strong breeze.
The second half was tough going with neither side registering a score for a full 10 mins.
Conor Bradley opened his account with a point, followed by a point from midfielder Conor Harkin.
Well on top at midfield, Inishowen scored a fine point through Peter Mc Laughlin. Dara
O Connor netted a goal shortly after to put the Inshowen team a point up. This kick started the Donegal
team who responded with a goal on 50 min. Johnny Devlin received a knock and had to go off, and during this period Inishowen conceded 2 points. Another 2 points from play from Donegal restored their lead to 6 pts before Dara O Connor had the last say with the final point of the match.
All in all it was a good display from Inishowen who had a number of players in the u-15 Óg sport and a player who won a hurling All Ireland medal the previous day. Fatigue played a part in the closing stages of the match but over all this was the best performance to date from the Ranafast squad.
Colaisti Inis Eoghain: Adam Byrne, Jonathan Devlin, Bruce Waldron, Kieran O Connor, Jamie Mc Laughlin, Conor Brennan, Jason Doherty, Peter Mc Laughlin 0-1, Conor Harkin 1-1, Conor Mc Cormick 1-1, Conor Bradley 0-1, Mattie Barber, Dara O Connor 1-1, Dean Kelly, Ruairi Bradley, Stephen Doherty.

Senior Football: Naomh Mhuire 0-14; Carndonagh 0-07.
The outing last Saturday evening to this club based in the Gaeltacht was not a happy one for the Carn mentors or players. This is nothing new for Carn teams, for as the records show it has always been difficult to secure a victory at 'The Banks'. The new clubrooms and the new playing field are the only change to the delightful scenery. Having the cup of tea before and after the game is another welcome spin off of the new facilities and a chance to meet up with some old adversaries.
The game itself was a one sided affair with Carn playing against a very stiff breeze in the first half. Naomh Mhuire made the most of the wind to deliver well placed cross field ball to their eager forwards. The statistics tell the tale of this fist half; of the 13 shots on the Carn goal the Naomh Mhuire forwards scored 11 points. At this stage manager Canny realised that the Carn forwards would have to produce the same form in the second period if his team had any chance of over taking the opposition. Eanna Newton scored the only point for Carn in the first half.
In the second half with wind advantage Carn were hoping to get an early score but it was Naomh Mhuire who scored a point in the second minute followed by another on the 10th minute. Ritchie Cunningham scored Carn's second point and this led to a change of fortunes for a short time. Points from Cathal Doherty who came on as a sub, Garvan McGrenra, another one from Ritchie Cunningham and Gerard Doherty gave some hope but it was too little too late. Although substitute Declan O'Donnell scored a point for Carn in the 26th minute to bring their tally to 7, Naomh Mhuire scored two more to make 14 in total.
This defeat will not dishearten the Carn lads and with 5 league games remaining (three at home and two away) they are aiming to finish the season on a winning note. Injuries have dogged the players all season and the manager has had to plan every game with a different set of players. However great credit is due to those players who continually come to training and give their full commitment to the team each week.
The Carn panel were; Dermot Doherty(B), Conor Doherty(O), Paddy Nelson, Ryan Davenport, Paddy McCallion, Mark Canny, Rory Ward, Gerard Doherty(K), Kevin Doherty(T), Garvan McGrenra, Ritchie Cunningham, Eanna Newton, Kevin Doherty(L), Stephen Doherty(B), Fergal Mathews, Cathal Doherty(K), Declan O'Donnell, Liam Shiels, Robin O'Doherty.
U14 Northern Board Championship: Carndonagh 2-20; Milford 2-07.
Played in the glorious sunshine at Pairc Uí Dhochartaigh on the 25th August, this young Carn team set out to make amends for the earlier one point defeat to Milford in the Northern Board league final.
Carn got off to a strong start with good possession won around the middle and soon began moving the ball well and taking their scores. This second meeting with Milford was always going to be well contested and Carn had to work hard despite having a lot of possession.
Throughout the first half in particular, the Carn defense and back three in particular were tested on a number of occasions and were not found wanting.
However Carn remained in control around the middle third of the field and closed the half out with two points ahead at 0-9 to 1-4.
The second half found a Carn side that were determined to see their hard work further rewarded. Throughout the field they worked for each other and played some fine attacking football with the scoreboard ticking over after most attacks.
Overall Carn were worthy of this win and should take a lot of confidence from a fine team performance.
The Carn team were: Fergal Bradley, Brian McElaney, Danny Monagle, Eoin Kelly, Luke McLaughlin, Ryan Doherty, Darragh Browne, Declan Donaghey, Dillon Ruddy, Fergal Doherty, Thomas O'Sullivan, Mathew McLaughlin, Ronan Doherty, Ronan Hartin, Roy Davison, Ronan Bradley, Ben Lafferty, Joseph McKinney and Gavin McLaughlin.

Carndonagh V Fanad Gaels, Wednesday 1st September
Carn have been drawn at home for the next round, which is a semi-final encounter with Fanad Gaels at 7pm on Wednesday 1st September. As always a large local
support will be appreciated.
Senior Football:Naomh Padraig 0-12 Convoy 1-6
Naomh Pádraig had the advantage going into this second leg encounter however were made to work hard in seeing off a determined and young Convoy side at Ture on Saturday. The visitors showed their intent within the first minutes when a long ball into the Muff defence fell to the Convoy corner forward who bore down on goal and coolly finished to the net. Naomh Pádraig responded well with a Declan McLaughlin free and almost scored a goal of their own when a high ball was palmed down by full forward Aidan Lynch into the path of Eunan Keaveney however his shot crashed off the crossbar and over the bar. The home side levelled matters when Declan McLaughlin picked up the ball wide on the right, ghosted past his marker and clipped the ball over with his weaker left foot. Convoy were creating chances however hit a few poor wides and it was Naomh Pádraig who took the lead with a second point from Eunan Keaveney. Convoy however levelled with a close range free before Declan McLaughlin sent over a free of his own for Muff to leave it 0-05 to 0-04 at the break. The second half was also a close fought affair. A Declan McLaughlin point gave Muff a 2-point lead however Convoy responded with a score of their own. Aidan Lynch then scored 2 points in a row, one a close range free while Convoy also knocked over an easy free. The visitors then hit their 4th point of the game however Dermot Keaveney responded for Muff with a great score after a mazy run. Convoy however battled back and scored 2 points, one either side of a Mark Duffy point for Naomh Pádraig. The home side then finished strongly to see of the Convoy challenge, with Dermot McColgan powering through to blast his shot over the bar and then Dermot Keaveney scored an equally impressive point to leave it 0-12 to 1-06 at the end.
