Work on the Donegal GAA Centre of Excellence at Convoy could be subjected to delays after the discovery of possible Bronze Age artefacts during excavation work last week.

Traces of a settlement were unearthed by workers on the ground and work was halted while an on-site archaeologist consulted Department of the Environment officials.

Work later recommenced with the area in question - which stretches to approximately four metres squared - cordoned off pending further investigations, and the Donegal County Board remains uncertain of the potential repercussions for the project.

County Board secretary Aodh Martin O'Donnell told the Donegal Democrat, "We really don't know where we are at and what lies ahead until we hear from the Department."

Situated close to Convoy in the east of the county, the Donegal Centre of Excellence received planning permission last year but has already been mired in controversy over the loss of its proposed regional status, which could have resulted in Eur1m of funding from Ulster Council. Tweet
