McGuinness: Cassidy too young to retire

Armagh's Stefan Forker and Donegal's Kevin Cassidy battle for possession during the NFL Div 2 clash at Letterkenny.
New Donegal football boss Jim McGuinness is hoping to talk Kevin Cassidy out of retirement.

The former All-Star announced his inter-county retirement at the age of just 28 in the wake of Donegal's heavy All-Ireland qualifier loss to Armagh last month, and one of McGuinness' first tasks will be to persuade him to return to the fold.

"Kevin Cassidy is still a young man and I will be having a chat with him shortly and he has a lot to contribute," said the Glenties man, who was appointed Donegal manager for a four-year term on Monday night.

"There is a lot of work to be done and Donegal don't look like a team that has belief at present. Donegal don't look like a team that has a belief that they can win an Ulster championship at present.

"We have a lot of players who have not realised their full potential and we intend to help them achieve their goals. We want a squad of players that have a hunger and a passion and desire to play for Donegal. We want 30 players that our supporters can be proud of."
