McGuinness set for quick appointment

Jim McGuinness will be installed as the new Donegal football manager next Monday night.

The Naomh Chonaill clubman, who led the county under 21s to an All-Ireland final appearance earlier this year, will meet with the county board executive tonight after being the only candidate to succeed John Joe Doherty, who stepped down in the wake of Donegal's tame championship exit at the hands of Armagh.

Peter McGinley, Maxi Curran and Pat Shovlin will form his backroom team and it's understood McGuinness is keen to retain his role as under 21 manager.

The 1992 All-Ireland winner's appointment is being fast-tracked as the next board meeting is not until September 6 and he is keen to start working as soon as possible.

"I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but behind the scenes we'd be foolish not to be planning," he said.

"I feel there's a need for an extensive conditioning programme for the winter months."

McGuinness will become the third member of Donegal's 1992 All-Ireland winning team to manage the county seniors, following in the footsteps of Declan Bonner and Doherty.
