McGuinness poised to land Donegal job
July 20, 2010
Jim McGuinness is set to be installed as the new Donegal football manager in the coming weeks after it emerged that he was the only applicant for the position ahead of last night's deadline.
Unless there was another applicant late last night, it means the 1992 All-Ireland winner's name will be put before club delegates for ratification at next month's county board meeting in Ballybofey.
McGuinness managed the Donegal under 21s to an All-Ireland final appearance in May and is the only candidate to publicly declare his interest in the position, which was vacated by John Joe Doherty last month.
Former Louth manager Paddy Carr, whose parents hail from Fanad, had been sounded out by county board officials, but withdrew his candidacy yesterday.
"I can't let my name go forward on this occasion," said the Navan-based schoolteacher, who led Kilmacud Crokes to an All-Ireland club title last year.
"Logistically, I'm just not in a position to give the commitment required. I'm with Kilmacud Crokes at the moment and want to see that out."
