Inishowen GAA notes
March 10, 2010
Buncrana
The U8, U10 and U12 hurlers will train in the Scarvey from 11am-12.15pm on Sunday. Anyone who is interested in playing hurling are most welcome and are encouraged to come along and give it a go.
Our U10 hurlers made the trip to Magherafelt on Saturday to play in the Ulster indoor league. Fielding two teams the boys performed well. Team One won 2 and lost 3; Team Two won 1, drew 1 and lost 2. The indoor season will climax this weekend with the northwest indoor league finals being held in Letterkenny.
U10, U12 and U13 football training will take place in the Scarvey every Friday night at 7pm. All players welcome, with both the U12 and U13 leagues starting in the next few weeks attendance at training is essential.
U8 football training will take place as normal on Fridays at 7pm in Crana College. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused by last Friday night's timetabling mix-up.
U6 football training will not take place next Saturday 13 March due to coaches attending courses.
Buncrana senior hurlers played their first competitive game of the season on Saturday at home in the Ulster Senior League against Carrickmacross. It was a fine bright evening in the Scarvey, Carrickmacross got the first point but before they even turned around the home team had levelled and then hit the back of the net to lead by three. From then on it was all Buncrana, it was evident that this was a much fitter, quicker and hungrier Buncrana side than last year. The step up to senior and all the hard work in preseason was showing, Buncrana scored another 3-5 with Carrickmacross finishing the first half as they started with one final point. Buncrana came out of the blocks in the second half like lighting with another goal but Carrickmacross were not going to take this and fought back with two quick goals and three points but nevertheless at the final whistle Buncrana came out on top 7-8 to 3-4.
Team. Philip Harkin, Mathew Arthur, PJ Doherty, Lee Duffy, Anthony Boyle, Seamus Hickey, Adrian Deery, Shaun Coyle (0-2), Stephen Dean Mc Fadden, Alan Furlong, Fergal Doherty, Ronan Walsh, Steven Boyle (2-3), Eunan Green (3-0), Gerard Boyle (1-2). Subs. Christy Mc Dermott (0-1), David Guilfoyle (1-0), Andrew Nelson, Gerry Fagan, Jamie Duffy, Denver Coyle.
By contrast Buncrana's Senior Footballers bowed out of the Ulster Intermediate Club Football League with a six point defeat away to Moneymore of Derry last weekend. This ends Buncrana run in the football competition for this year.
Buncrana Senior hurlers are away to Ardoyne of Antrim on Saturday 13 March at 4.30pm, in the Ulster Senior Club Hurling League group 5C. Further details of fixtures and results can be seen on www.ulstergaa.ie. A bus is currently being organised so anyone travelling should contact one of the team managers, Denis Harkin or Martin Mullan, as soon as possible to confirm their place.
All clubs in the Northern Board who are participating in the U10 and U12 Go Games Blitzes this year must nominate at least two names between the ages of 16 and 18 to train as Young Whistlers. There will be a short referees course and these Young Whistlers will then be able to act as referees at their own clubs blitzes, these names must be with regional secretary Jim Quinn before Wednesday 10 March. The senior hurlers got off to a winning start in the Ulster Senior Hurling League on Saturday afternoon. Burt beat Antrim side, Clooney Gaels, 2-9 to 2-7 in what was a demanding contest between the two sides. The match was switched to the Templemore Sports Complex, with our own pitch not just ready for playing.
Burt fielded a team mixed with experience and youth, with a number of players unavailable on the day. While it was great to see some new blood breaking through, it was 'old-timer' Andy Wallace who showed everyone how it's done with a personal tally of 2-7. Wallace was on form from the dead-ball, with a number of those scores coming from his own half. Jonathan McGrath hit two points from play to complete Burt's score.
Next Saturday the hurlers play Newry Shamrocks in a neutral venue, which has yet to be established.
The senior footballers took to the field for the first time this year in an Inishowen league game against Carn. Played under lights in Páirc Úi Dhochartaigh, it was a low scoring affair with both teams looking for fresh ideas for the year ahead. Ultimately though Burt had a little more in the tank and won 1-7 to 0-6. The next game against Malin is scheduled for this Wednesday night, 10 March, at 7.45pm under lights in Carndonagh.
Training for all senior/minor club members is on Tuesday nights at 6.50pm. Senior hurling is on Wednesday evenings and football on Thursday nights. Both times are 6.50pm. Please remember to bring your own bottle of water to training. If you can please bring at least a 1.5ltr bottle.
The minor footballers are back in action this Friday after a bye last week. This Friday they are away to Carndonagh. Throw-in is 7.30pm.Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Contact Liam McKinney for more details.
The u16 footballers had their first warm-up game on Sunday afternoon against Letterkenny Gaels. Training for the U16 football team is on this Sunday morning next at 10.30am at the pitch in Burt. Contact any of the coaches for any details.
U13/U14 indoor training starts this Thursday, 11th March in the Aileach Youth Club from 5.30-7pm. Once again please get in contact if there are any problems.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Annie McDermott, The Cottages Burnfoot won €60. The numbers drawn were 5, 2, 4, 6, 7, 3, 1. Next week's jackpot is €1,450. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8pm or hand it to any club member. If anyone is interested in signing up to the direct debit, please contact Liam McKinney.
The U10 hurlers travelled to Magherafelt on Saturday to take part in the Ulster Provincial blitz. Over 100 teams from all over Ulster took part. Burt took two teams, Blue and Gold, and it was a great learning experience. The Blue team competed well with teams in their group, winning three and losing two. The Gold team failed to win any games but it must be said the groups weren't graded and our beginner's team struggled against the 'A' teams from other clubs. It would possibly have been better for local teams to organise a little blitz and save themselves from travelling such a long distance, and been more beneficial.
Next Saturday, the U10s are back at the Letterkenny IT for the final round of the North West indoor hurling league. Burt's session is from 11.30am-1pm. More information will be given out to players and parents via the schools this week. If there are any problems, please contact Manus O'Donnell or Johnny Downey.
U12 hurlers involved in the trials for Croke Park will be contacted by their coaches during the week, regarding next Sunday's final trial in O'Donnell Park, Letterkenny.

Carn
Our annual dinner dance was held in the Strand Hotel on Friday 5 March. It was indeed encouraging to see so many of our younger club members attend what was a most enjoyable evening. The warm atmosphere and excellent cuisine provided by the hotel ensured that we all enjoyed the night.
After the meal our chairperson Paddy McLaughlin addressed the gathering and welcomed special guest Grace Boyle and her husband James. Grace is cisteoir of CLG Dun na nGall and in her after dinner speech paid special tribute to the club for winning County grounds of the year 2009. Paddy in his speech referred to the hard work that was going on in the club with all age groups and he thanked all those who have contributed and continue to contribute to the development of our club both on and off the pitch.
After the speeches Joe Hegarty, who did a great job along with his committee in organising the dance, introduced the many individuals and teams who came forward to receive their awards. The biggest applause of the night was given to Liam McLaughlin who got a standing ovation when he went forward to receive the club person of the year award. With Joe on the mike we were not short of entertainment and the prize giving ceremony was full of razzmatazz, keeping the crowd engaged. The match was a good work out for both teams in preparation for the forthcoming county league. Burt ran out winners by a goal.

Training for the seniors and reserves continues every Monday and Wednesday evening in Carrick. With the season expected to get underway on 27 March it is important that a big effort is put in at the start to try and get off to a good campaign.

The minor team got their Inishowen campaign off to a successful start with a 1-9 to 0-4 victory over Muff (see separate report).
Again the club had large representation on the various ladies county teams at the weekend, Kathy McLaughlin, Sarah Jane McDonald and Blannad McLaughlin were all part of the County U14 team that had two points to spare over Tyrone in their opening Ulster championship match while we were also well represented in the county U16 and Senior teams that had victories over Derry and Sligo respectively. Urris
The Senior panel made a positive start to the playing year by beating Muff last Saturday afternoon in Straid. The team which took to the field may not be this year's starting 15 every week, being a mixture of Senior, Reserve and Minor players, but everyone who pulled on the jersey acquitted themselves well and there were many good things to be taken from the display for all concerned.
The game was played at a decent pace for a first outing with some well-taken scores by both teams. The home team's tally of 2-12 if repeated every week would surely see them win the majority of their games and this was one of the main positives to come out of the match. There was some errant kicking at times, the odd missed pass and a few mistimed tackles but this was to be expected from two teams who were playing their first game of the year. Muff maybe suffered more than Urris from missed chances but it was the home side that were dominant for much of the game and John will be pleased by the effort he got from his patched together outfit. There were some notable absentees on the home side and with their return over the next few weeks the side will become all the stronger. The younger lads who took part didn't look out of their depth and this too is an encouraging sign.
The game finished Urris 2-12 Muff 0-10. Urris scorers were Donal Kelly 1-2, Damian Friel 1-1, Rocky Ivers 0-4, Mickey Kelly 0-2, Brian Kelly, Alan Friel and Sean Doherty (T) a point a piece.
There is a Charity seven-a-side tournament in Burt next Saturday from 11am onwards and Urris will have a team taking part. Sure to be a good day's entertainment with teams from ten clubs taking part over the course of the day.
The Variety Concert has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances and will be rescheduled over the next few weeks. Dates and times should be confirmed next week. The Inishowen Board is running an Irish night of music and song in An Grianán Hotel, Burt on Tuesday, 16 March with acts from all over Inishowen including Urris, the night gets underway at 10pm and admission is €5 which includes supper.
The Club will be hosting a Poker Classic in the Square Bar on Easter Bank Holiday Monday (more details about the classic can be had by contacting Adrian Doherty or Damian Harkin). If anyone has ideas that they feel might help to raise a few euro the finance committee would love to hear about them. Contact Edward, Adrian or Damian and share your ideas with them.
Training will get underway for the following teams over the next couple of weeks: U14 girls will start on Wednesday, March 24 from 4.30pm. If the girls have questions they should contact Paul. The U12 boys will start training on Saturday, March 20; the time will be confirmed in next week's bulletin. Any queries should be directed to Barney Friel. U10 and U8 boys and girls will also start on Saturday, March 20, training will start at 10am and will last for an hour over the first few weeks, this will probably be extended as the weather improves. The boys and girls will be very busy with blitzes for both the U10s and u8s arranged over the coming months and a good turnout at training is essential. Any queries should be directed to David.
There will also be a Level 1 course running in Carndonagh on the weekends of March 19-20 and March 26-27 inclusive, anyone interested should contact Adrian as soon as possible.
The Senior, Reserve and Minor panels will have their last session in the Youth Club on Wednesday night at the usual time with second outdoor session to be arranged with the lads then.
The minor boys played their postponed game against Carndonagh on Tuesday evening. The team have no game on Friday evening this week.
The U16 boys will have one last session in the Youth Club before training moves outdoors for the season; the session will run from 8-9pm after the Senior session as usual. Everyone is asked to bring €2 to cover the cost of the hall. Their playing season gets under way this Sunday at midday when they take on Robert Emmet's in their first Northern Board league match. The Inishowen season gets underway with a trip to Muff on Tuesday, March 30 at 6.30pm.
There was no winner of the Match and Win jackpot drawn on February 25. The years drawn were 1966, 1976, 1980 and 1982, the Jackpot has now risen to €1,100, the €15 consolation prizes went to: Neil McGonigle (Jnr), Roxtown; Leonard Houton, Malin; Neil Grant, Gortfad; Gerry Doherty, Leenan Keil; Danny Gordon, Isle of Doagh.
