Sweeney bows out

Donegal's Raymond Sweeney
Donegal's Raymond Sweeney has retired from intercounty football. The Dungloe man has decided to call time on an incredible county career that saw him pull on the Green & Gold shirt a whopping 96 times over the course of ten seasons. He was first drafted into the Donegal senior squad by Declan Bonner in 1997 and made his championship debut against Antrim the following season. He missed out on the national league success of 2007, having dropped off the squad at the end of the previous year. John Joe Doherty recalled him last year. "I just decided at the end of last season it was time to go," Sweeney revealed. "While I enjoyed last year and I was delighted to come back when I got the call from John Joe, I am 32 and I have three young children and I felt the time was right to move on. "I was happy to return last year and enjoyed being involved again, but it was not all that big of a decision really."
