Donegal hopeful refuses to canvass for chair
November 28, 2008
A candidate for the Donegal chairman's position has released an extraordinary statement explaining why he won't be canvassing ahead of next month's county convention.
Glenswilly's Eddie Gallagher is viewed as the rank outsider in the contest which will also involve outgoing chairman Sean Kelly and former inter-county referee Mick McGrath.
In his statement, he said: "A note to clarify my 'no campaigning' strategy in going for the position of county chairman to the confused and befuddled.
"How many in the county want the job and responsibility of a high-profile position with no pay? Being a 'fearless toe-rag' who trusts his fate with relish, I just feel I have the cutting edge conviction and kick-ass confidence to do the job a whole lot better than any of the recent incumbents.
"A year ago, I approached the Glenswilly club to address a meeting and explain why I wanted to go for the job and I was told I could not because I was not a club member. This made me feel like 'Johnny Foreigner' in the place I grew up in.
"I don't at present have the infrastructure to go for the job. I have no transport, no phone. I value my peace of mind and joyous freedom of thought too much to ever give into that cesspit of cronyism and confinement that many fall for.
"I think a 'no campaigning policy' may be a valid and viable approach - time will tell."
