DRA delay verdict
November 28, 2008
The Disputes Resolution Authority has reserved its decision on the case taken by Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew against the Donegal county board over the process used to appoint John Joe Doherty as football manager.
On Wednesday, the pair put their case to the GAA's arbitration body to have the county manager's selection process started from scratch. They claim the process that led to their former team-mate Doherty's appointment was 'flawed'.
1992 All-Ireland winners Bonner and Mulgrew were due to be ratified as joint-managers at a county board meeting last month, only for Doherty to speak at the meeting and reveal that he had originally been offered the job. He was later offered the post a second time, and was duly ratified by the county board.
Bonner and Mulgrew expressed dismay with the process and immediately signalled their intent to go to the DRA. That hearing lasted four hours in Monaghan on Wednesday with submissions made by both the Donegal county board and Bonner and Mulgrew.
It could be early next week before the three-man panel advise the DRA as to what their decision is. Regardless of the outcome, a disgruntled and disillusioned Bonner has already stated that he won't be getting involved with Donegal at inter-county level again for a long time to come.
