Inishowen GAA notes
November 25, 2008
Buncrana
Pride of place this week goes to the under 13 footballers, who won the long awaited Inishowen final played in Carn on Wednesday night. The game was played in atrocious conditions, and it was great credit to both teams that it was played in such a sporting manner. Buncrana started the stronger, and following early pressure produced the games first score, a well taken point from the lively Dara O'Connor, further first half scores from Peter McLaughlin, Ryan Curran and Conor Allen ensured that Buncrana went in at half time in front.
Urris came into the game in the second half but every time they came back, Buncrana were able to respond with some well-taken goals combined with some great saves from Caolan McGonigle, and defensive performances from the backs. Further scores from Bruce Waldron, McLaughlin, Allen, and a captain's performance from O'Connor (who scored 3-1) ensured the cup was on its way to the Scarvey. Final score 5-6 to 2-6. Congratulations to Sean Clerkin and his backroom staff on a good finish to the year.

Thanks to the Crana College staff for the use of there fine facilities, and with all the above sessions new players are always welcome.

Burt
Congratulations to the Burt under-13 football team that won the Division 2 county final on Sunday against Urris. Burt won 3-11 to 1-5, after putting on a show that was testament of their passion, drive and footballing ability.
Despite early concerns about the stormy conditions, the weather picked up for the game and it was a bright start for Burt with a quick goal. Burt had the wind in their favour and took a half-time lead of 3-2 to 1-1, with the midfield and half-forward line creating the opportunities in front of goal.
Similar to their semi-final win over St Naul's, Burt doubled their effort in the second half as they set about adding to their lead. The second half showcased the good performance of the defence and they led the way by breaking up the Urris attacks and winning ball to provide the forwards with possession. Burt scored nine points to Urris' four in the second half and get their first win over Urris in three outings, albeit in the big one.
Individual performances from all 15 plus the subs - where we welcomed back Gavin McGrath, Matthew Breslin and Mark Coyle from injury - were excellent and their victory was the first time Burt had won a county final at this level since 1995. Well done to all involved the managers, the coaches, the parents and all the supporters who came throughout the year. Thanks also to Burnfoot Service station for hosting the post match meal.

On a very wet, windy and cold November Sunday, Kieran Canny's men, fielding without a number of regular players, showed that his squad has both strength and depth by comprehensively defeating Red Hugh's on a scoreline of 0-15 to 1-3. Once again this was a good team performance, with young players like Conor Doherty, who was replacing the injured Michael McLaughlin at full back, proving their worth. Training will be held this coming week on Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm.
Congratulations to Kevin and his Reserve Side squad who defeated Red Hugh's by 2-8 to 0-9 to finish the season unbeaten. The highlight of this game came when Kevin playing at full forward broke the ball down to Tony Diver who volleyed it to the back of the net. After the game the captain County PRO Seamus O'Donnell presented Paddy McCallion with the league cup.

As expected it was a very tough game and the team had to pull out all they had to capture the title. Team captain Danielle Logue received the trophy from county board member Maggie Foy.
The club had a record number of six players in the Donegal panel for the play off game against Meath in Cavan on Sunday with five of them starting and one coming on as sub as Donegal maintained their senior championship status with a 2-9 to 0-6 victory. Well done to all and thanks to everyone who came along on the night.
Flu and a fired up Burt team saw the under 13s fall at the final hurdle last Sunday in the County Division 2 final. The lads gave it their best shot, but with many of them feeling the affects of this year's variation of the flu virus it was always going to be a tough ask. You can only play the team in front of you and Burt took full advantage of the opportunity offered. The Urris club would like to congratulate both Burt for winning the All County title and Buncrana for winning the Inishowen title, we will lick our wounds over the winter and look forward to the match ups again next year. This has been a good year for Inishowen teams and with good close rivalries like these every team will be lifted to greater heights.
Well done to all the prize-winners at the Underage presentations last Friday night and thank you to everyone who attended or helped out on the night. The Under 10 players of the year were Clare Doherty and Gareth Harkin; Under 12 players of the year were Jaime-Louise Gordon and Ferghal Harkin; Under 13 player of the year was the team captain Darren Coyle whose brother Jamie took the honour for the Under 14 team (of which he was joint-captain). Darren Coyle was also voted Player's Player of the Year for the Under 14 team. Darren, Jamie, Conor Bradley and Dean McDaid picked up club jackets for their perfect attendance at training throughout the season for the Under 14s.
The Club competed in six 'A' finals and two 'B' finals across these grades this year and the players, their parents and mentors should be rightfully proud of how they have performed over the course of the season. We look forward to 2009 when we hope to see all our juvenile teams progress to even greater heights. A huge vote of thanks goes to all the coaches who helped out with the teams over the course of what has been a long year - without so many willing hands helping out the Club's success wouldn't have been so pronounced on the field of play.
There was no winner of the Match and Win jackpot last week, next week's jackpot will now be ?660, the years drawn were: 1962, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
