O'Boyle outraged over ruled out 'score'

November 17, 2008
St Eunan's manager Eamonn O'Boyle argued after the defeat to Crossmaglen yesterday that his side should have had a score that was ruled by match referee Joe McQuillan. Eunan's star forward Ross Wherity thought he had reduced the game's difference to a point in the 57th minute, but after McQuillan had consulted with a waving linesman the Cavan ref over ruled on an umpire's decision and signalled the effort wide. O'Boyle hit out afterwards, bemused by how a linesman's view on a score can be heard while standing along the sidelines, as far away from the action as managers or subs. "What can I say? I felt we got and I have never seen in my life a linesman to disallow a point before. I thought it was crazy, a crazy way to go," said O'Boyle. "It took him so long to react to it. Did he react to the bench? Did he react to the crowd? I don't know. The umpire and the referee gave it, he disallowed it. That would have taken us back to one point and it would have given us a little bit of an impetus. But you take the good with the bad." O'Boyle added: "It's not sour grapes. The better team probably won on the day. I think we were an unknown quantity to Crossmaglen and may have taken them on the hop in the first-half but I'm very disappointed." Meanwhile, Crossmaglen boss Donal Murtagh believes that the linesman's opinion was correct and McQullian's decision not to award the point was justified. He said: "It thought it was wide. The linesman was in a good possession, the linesman saw it. It was never a point."
