Brogan converts injury time free to take the points for Naomh Bríd

It proved to be a disappointing afternoon in Traigh a Locha for Aidan Mc Ateer’s men as a closely contested game went the way of Naomh Bríd after they converted a free kick in stoppage time to secure a one point victory.

Conditions in Traigh a Locha weren’t perfect, the ground was heavy, with a fair breeze blowing in the direction of Ballylar.

Gaeil Fhánada played with the wind at their backs in the opening period and were dominant for much of the first half. Both sides were guilty of early missed before Seamí Nanny Friel finally opened the scoring for Gaeil Fhánada the ninth minute after a good link up play with Mark Mc Ateer. Fanad  built on that over the next five minutes with three further points, the first a Bernard McGettigan effort from play, a Seamí Nanny free kick after Mark Mc Ateer was upended and the third score came from Mark himself from play. Fanad were completely on top during this period but missed a couple of decent chances to stretch their lead before Seamí Nanny fired over the Gaels’ fifth point after 20 minutes. The game was hard hitting and some of the Gaels forwards felt aggrieved with the attention they were receiving off the ball. Naomh Bríd finally started to play their way onto proceedings and held onto possession much better in the latter stages they got their name on the scoreboard with five minutes of the half remaining through a Darragh Brogan effort from play. Brogan added his second point from a placed  ball before Gearóid Gallagher fired over a great point just before the half-time whistle. Gaeil Fhánada 0:05 Naomh Bríd 0:03.

Fanad began the second half the stronger with Seamí Nanny firing over a point within the opening minute. Ryan Brogan responded for the visitors two minutes later before Eoghan Carr struck the second Gaeil Fhánada point of the half. Gary McCafferty responded with a fine Naomh Bríd point before the games pivotal score arrived eleven minutes into the second half. Ryan Brogan who was lively all day, got in behind Fanad defence and struck his shot low into the corner of the net. That put the visitors into the lead and it energised them going forward. They were awarded three frees which were all converted by Darragh Brogan to leave four points between the teams. Fanad needed a bit of inspiration and with a couple of minutes left on the clock were awarded a penalty. Fergal Friel was hauled to the ground and Seamí Nanny made no mistake from the spot. Mark Mc Ateer fired over an equalising score in injury time but Naomh Bríd had one further opportunity. John Mc Nulty fired wide but referee Tony Gallagher adjudged that he had been fouled which gave Darragh Brogan an easy opportunity in front of the posts to take the victory.

Seamus Coyle had another good day at the office while Mark Mc Ateer and Bernard Mc Gettigan showed well again. The Brogans were a constant threat for the visitors and Darragh was deadly accurate with his free kicks.

Naomh Bríd were the fresher team in the second half and one wonders if the fact the Gaels had two games over the weekend to the visitors one was one of the defining factors in the result. Aidan and the lads will have to dust themselves down and prepare for the visit of Malin to Páirc Uí Shiadhail next weekend. Bernard Mc Gettigan’s reserves will also be back in action next weekend, having had no game this weekend.

It twisted, turned and swayed in both directions over the course of the hour, but in the grand scheme of things, neither team could be dissatisfied with a point.

Gaeil Fhánada were the livelier during the opening exchanges and had the first three efforts at goal. Seamí Nanny opened the scoring with a fisted effort over the bar. The hosts responded with with a pair of scores by the seventh minute, one of them a free from influential corner forward Jack Gillespie. Mark Mc Ateer, who was causing bother inside fired over an equalising score before the Gaels kicked on with a booming Eoghan Carr effort and a Mc Ateer free after he was fouled himself. The game continued to ebb and flow and within five minutes, the hosts were back in the lead on the back of three Gillespie points, two from play and one free. Seamí Nanny responded with a second fisted effort before Red Hughs kicked in with two further points from play as the half drew towards its conclusion. Gaeil Fhánada rallied again in the final moments however, with two monster scores from Oisín Shiels and Paul Coyle levelling the scores for the fifth time to leave it seven points each at the break.

Calvin Bradley put the hosts ahead within the first minute but both teams were guilty of a few bad misses during the opening exchanges. Bernard Mc Gettigan was very unlucky to see an effort return off the post but it wouldn’t be the final time the woodwork would have a say in proceedings. Gillespie stretched the Red Hughs lead to two but Gaeil Fhánada really kicked in after that. Oisín Shiels had a huge ten minutes in midfield and orchestrated a lot of the good forward momentum. Mark Mc Ateer fired over from play before a pair from Seamí Nanny, one from a free and the other from play pushed the Gaels into the lead. Shaun Kerr and Odhrán Shiels entered the fray and Kerr fired over a monster score after his arrival. Seamí Nanny stretched the lead to three before Red Hughs came back into it. Two Gillespie frees reduced the gap to one but Eoin Mc Gonigle pulled off a fine save low to his right to keep the Gaels ahead. Mark Mc Ateer gave the Gaels some respite after he was upended. He fired over the resulting free but Calvin Bradley responded for the hosts. Referee Marc Brown called five added minutes and hosts really drove on in search of an equaliser. Gillespie hit a post before Bradley got the score to level it. Red Hughs had a great opportunity to steal it, but the post again came to Fanad’s rescue when the ball really should have sailed over the bar. A combination of John Friel, Jonny Gallagher and Seamus Coyle dealt with the dropping ball and with that Marc Brown sounded the full time whistle.

The game was played at a great intensity and both teams showed their high energy levels. Jack Gillespie was outstanding for Red Hughs in the first half while Gaeil Fhánada’s inside line of Seamí, Mark and Eoghan were a constant threat. Oisín Shiels was immense during the second half, while Eoin Mc Gonigle pulled off a super save. Jonny Gallagher really steadied the ship in the second half as well. It was a strong display all round, and the fact they played with 14 men for the majority of the game makes the point all the more impressive. A quick turnaround awaits the lads as they face Naomh Bríd tomorrow.

Win for the Ladies in Castlefin

Gaeil Fhánada 2-14

Robert Emmets 3-8

The Senior ladies travelled to Castlefin last night to take on Robert Emmets in their fourth match of the league campaign.

It was a very entertaining game of football between the sides, with each set of players battling for every ball. The teams were quite evenly matched but it was Gaeil Fhánada who started stronger and kept a good momentum going throughout the first half. Robert Emmets were unlucky too in this period and this, coupled with some good Fanad defending, meant that the Gaels were ahead when the whistle sounded for the break.

The second half started much the same way as the opening period had ended. However it wasn't long before Robert Emmets started showing their strength and experience and Gaeil Fhánada found themselves on the back foot in the latter stages of the second half. The game could've went either way in the final minutes but the Gaels held on to win the match by 3 points. Credit to both teams for keeping the intensity high until the final whistle, particularly in the warm conditions.

Last night's result makes it four from four in the league for the Ladies. Maith sibh!

Girls take the points in Gaoth Dobhair

The U14 girls had another fruitful trip yesterday evening as they travelled to Machaire Gathlán to take on Gaoth Dobhair in their fourth outing of the competition.

Rarely are conditions in Gaoth Dobhair as perfect for football as they were last night, with a very slight breeze having no impact on proceedings.

Gaeil Fhánada began strongly and found the net in the opening minute, Iseult Ní Mhathúna with the score. Méabh Mc Ateer was unlucky to see her goalbound effort come back of the woodwork a minute or two later. Olivia Friel popped over a point, which was followed by a point from Iseult. Aoife Shiels who was brilliant all evening was heavily involved in the next score. She drove forward from wing back and fed Méabh Mc Ateer who buried the ball high into the roof of the net. Megan Mc Loughlin found her range from play before Iseult knocked over her second point and Emma Hunter added her first score of the game before half time. The hosts played very well in the final ten minutes of the half but were unlucky to see a fine drive return of the crossbar and a combination of Lisa Gallagher, Caitlin Heraghty and Ella Mc Bride snubbed out further goal opportunities. They did fire over some points as the game approached the break.

The Gaels played had the breeze at their backs in the second half and responded with some brilliant play all over the field. The quality of passing and movement of the ball was as good as we’ve seen it all year. Rachael Friel and Leah Mc Loughlin landed a point apiece before Emma Hunter got another score for the Gaels. Rachael Friel who had a very influential second half fired over the next two scores, either side of a Gaoth Dobhair point. The teams shared the next four points, two for the hosts and a point apiece for the Mc Loughlin twins. The Gaels finished off the scoring with a goal from close range from Méabh Mc Ateer and a Megan Mc Loughlin point.

Everyone contributed to a big team performance, but a special word of praise to Aoife Shiels who was fantastic in the first half and to Rachael Friel in the second. Natalie Mc Fadden made her first appearance last night as well and slotted in without a bother. Two home game over the next fortnight against Dungloe and Muff are the next fixtures.

Ár mbuíochas le CLG Ghaoth Dobhair as an fháilte a cuireadh romhainn aréir agus don tae agus na sólaistí a bhí ann i ndiaidh an chluiche.
