Derrytesk is not a very large place and it has one of four football teams in the parish of Clonoe. Up until a few months ago, had you asked any one about their football team, chances are that the answer would have been something like, "bottom of division three, holding everyone else up".
Not the case any more, because since Monday 1st August 2011, Derrytresk have continued to make history, and in Portloaise last Sunday they reached their ultimate goal, by earning a well deserved place in the All-Ireland Junior Football Final.
In Derrytresk, we have a panel of lads, who have worked endless over the past months, their determination, commitment and will to achieve, has to date been outstanding and last Sunday it was clear for all to see.
Yes, they got off to a shaky start, with some indifferent shooting, way ward passing and loss of possession, but Captain, Cathal O'Neill soon settled things down with the opening point in the 7th minute. Several chances were squandered by both sides in the first half as the game ebbed and flowed and it was indeed Dromid Pearses that went in at half, leading by one point.
Derrytresk began their second half, playing with great determination, and with an urgently to get to every ball first. Their work rate was outstanding and their level of play superb, thus earning them their place in the final.
Most people when analysing a game, will all have different views and usually a "man of the match". On Sunday, there were seventeen players who could have been that person, all of which had a job to do, and they did it splendidly. From the full and half back line, who got behind every attack and held Dromid Pearses to three points in the second half, only one from play, to the midfield who contested every thing. And the half forward line from where that superb goal was scored, to the attacking forwards. Truly this was an over all team performance.
We the Committee, Members and supporters would like to say a big thank you to the Derrytresk footballers for the many entertaining hours of play that they have given us so far, for the many talking points of tremendous scores and tackles and for bringing together old quaintness from latter years.
We have one more journey to make together and no doubt there will be a lot more talking points following the final game on Sunday 12th Feb in Croke Park.
