McEntee to appeal red card
December 01, 2008
John McEntee has confirmed that he will appeal the straight red card he received in the closing stages of Crossmaglen Rangers' drawn Ulster club football final against Ballinderry.
Tyrone referee Michael Sludden came under fire after he sent off three players and issued 12 yellow cards in a tempestuous decider at Brewster Park. And holders Cross' were particularly upset at the sending off of their former Armagh star six minutes from the end after what looked an innocuous challenge on Ballinderry's Darren Conway, who went down holding his face.
McEntee said: "According to the TV, it favours me.
"Sure we'll make the appeal and if it goes our way well and good. There was no intent but there was no intent in any of the sending-offs.
"Bad referees make bad decisions and it wasn't the first poor decision that went on either side."
McEntee felt Sludden should have made allowances for the frosty conditions and floodlights.
"God, it (his sending off) was soft but they were all soft. He has to allow for the weather. You can make slight error judgements under the lights and on slippy ground and you're going to have a harsh enough tackle.
"Both teams went out to play football and it was fairly free-flowing even though the referee blew the whistle a lot.
"At the end of the day, there was no malice in any of the decisions and I'm sure if you were talking to the man (Conway), I'm sure he's not sore."
