I cannot think of any other senior players that are available that should be on the panel to be honest.

haha what has me playing senior club or intercounty got to do with anything

Your missing what i am saying, my point is that Meath club football is in a horrendous state where the top senior clubs cant get players near the Senior intercounty panel. All the talk is of development squads and underage structures while the clubs go on living in dark ages.

The team is backboned by Ratoath who weren't good enough to get promoted from intermediate last year. If you think that the Meath team taking to the field Saturday evening is acceptable then fair enough. Your probably still living the fantasy where we can beat Dublin 'on our day'

And I played Senior football for 12 years if that makes a blind bit of difference

Because there are no other Senior players probably good enough to be on the panel. So what should MOD do then, give teams walkovers. Believe me winning a JFC or IFC can sometimes be a lot harder than Senior.

It amazes me that at time people come on this to post retarded comments about players not doing this or that. The truth is that Meath will stay Div 2 this year. They will then be able to consolidate and grow as this is a young team. These players give 5/6 nights a week to their county, they eat sleep and drink all that is Meath football. Give them respect because having played the game myself I know that nobody ever goes out at this level to perform poorly. Be proud of the collective that are doing their best for the county and stop berating them.

It is time to get real and develop football in the county. Develop the new talent and who knows. Maybe the good days will return.

This leaves a number of conclusions such as Senior standards have dropped to a level where its interchangable with Intermediate

Well that's the negative way of looking at it, the other way of looking at it is maybe the intermediate and junior clubs have gotten better. Anyway generally speaking I wouldn't say there is a huge difference between Senior and Intermediate in most counties, ok you'd expect Senior to be noticeably better than junior but some very good player still play for junior clubs.

The whole standard of football does need to increase in Meath though so we can reemerge from the dust but that has to start from underage level.

Throwing about words like retarded doesnt help anyone, possibly betrays your age. Talking about players giving there all, that the least i expect form a county footballer let alone from my own club team, but again you miss my point. I have no problem with the current Meath panel what i am saying is that a healthy Meath club scene would have more than 5 senior players starting.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and believe me come another train wreck of a championship people will be looking to point fingers, i respect the current management and think he is manfully following a certain philosophy, admirable yes. Correct? probably not.

Royalparro. That's a reasonable argument, while i wouldn't agree i can see your points, and thank you for both answering my questions in a articulate way and not resorting to name calling.
My point is that we may still loose all our games or majority next year un div 2, as i expect that in a long while some of the teams in it will be stronger than division one, im speaking specifically about Roscommon and down, which id say Tyrone, Armagh, and Derry would be better than both of them. So i guess that's where im coming from.
But only time will tell. So its wait and see. I agree we we wont get promotion this year. But hopefully we can remain next year , but it will be harder.

But there are alot more intermediate and junior clubs compared to senior clubs.

A lot of posters here are debating the relative merits of staying in division 2 or getting promoted to division 1 this year. I don't wish to be pessimistic but right now with a difficult match in Newry this weekend and the last game against an improving Cavan side, I would be happy to retain our Division 2 status and focus on a decent run n the championship.

Honestly everyone
It does not matter what grade you play as long as right players are selected and are 100% commited to the rigours of county football. As I have said numerous times micko and team are 100% to try and get meath back to the top table.I have stated the players that he has brought in over last few years and they are starting to develop finally example-menton,tormey,flanagan,mcgill,wallace,newman,o Sullivan, dalton, rooney, and a few more.It takes time and this a young team with a few senior players who are still very commited to both meath and bringing these young lads along.Injuries have not helped but they seem to be clearing up at right time.
sbray has stressed that the organization and set-up is the best it has ever been in his 12 years and improving all the time.Last year we were complaining about speed and strength of team and from what ive seen that has improved considerably and we still have 10 weeks to championship.
Many of meaths finest players were lower grade players in our heydays-ommalley,flynn,stafford,gillick,harnan,o Connell, nestor, kelly, dowd, mcdermott, ollie murphy and many more
Nowadays a county footballer spends 80% of his time with county and limited time with club so please relax and let these young commited players get meath back it wont be because of lack of effort and direction they are getting.
They are young and defintly improving

A lot of pace among forwards, better balance to team. Will need at least 2-12 (18) to win. Hopefully Newman can convert the frees, could be difference between winning/losing.

Ashrules, take the main motorway north and leave at the first Newry exit. That will take you down the hill along the Dublin Road to the city centre and you will see the Quays shoppings centre on your right as you reach the river. It is your best bet for parking, and there should be plenty of spaces there. You are about ten minutes walk from the ground,so just cross the bridge, take a right on the Warrenpoint Road and follow the crowds towards the floodlights of Pairc Elser. We always have a good battle with Meath so enjoy the game.

Id imagine Gillespie will be starting midfield, can see one or 2 changes before throw in.I was watching them training the other night and kevin reilly seems to be moving into the forwards, will be amazed if he starts at 6,menton struggling and id say he could be out tomorrow night.

Great stadium in Newry. You wont miss it with the floodlights on as your coming down the hill into the city centre. Get there early. It will be crazy with the afternoon saturday shopping.

This argument that if ya don't play for a senior club it somehow downgrades your ability too play intercounty is laughable....as Tampa said some of the Meath greats played for intermediate and junior clubs.....it's not the premier league where the best players play for the best teams, u play for the parish team where u are from , generally. Anyway is it not 7 senior players represented on that starting team v down high king, not 5?
