Division 3 League Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Cavan's weak points were shown up badly yesterday!! inside forward line and the changes being made along the side line lost the game last night. Very disappointing I thought the management would of learned from their mistakes against monaghan in the championship last year. Killian Clarke coming on at midfield with argue and givney sitting on the bench could anyone explain that one?

Roscommon much the better team in the second half. Cavan played a Roscommon team at about 70 per cent full strength and still couldn't win. Very unimpressed by Martin Dunne and I don't understand why he was taken off before Keating who was your main scoring threat. Roscommon were poor in the first half and Cavan were playing above themselves and still only managed a one point half time lead, that's where they lost the game. Cavan thought they had a rock solid defence until they met the Rossies who were not at full strength, ye just couldn't handle our forwards. Cavan conceded on average 9/10 points up until today, the Rossies doubled that average for ye tonight. Best team won, Cavan simply not good enough. Bit of a downer losing a U21 semi-final and a Div 3 final in 8 days, oh well :( . At least ye won the challenge match we had 4 weeks ago in Breffni.

If you are going to make a post at least get it right. Maybe read a match report you might be able to correct your error.

Every dog on the ditch knew Roscommon only started 7 of their main team against Cavan in the national league game as it was a dead rubber game.
Cavan started 11 but thats neither here nor there.
Cavan got what they set out to do and that was get promotion in Division 3 loosing last night might be hard for a few of them for most are starved of silver ware at senior level. I feel sorry for the die hard Cavan supporter who travel all over the country to watch their beloved county through thick and thin. Your day will come

that is a kop out statement. you go to win every game especially in croke park as there a usually big ones. Cavab were not content with promotion they wanted to win and fell short. The word I would use is bottle

Mackey worked very hard and was one of Cavans better players along with Martin Reilly and McDermott.

Taking nothing away from Roscommon all I said was that our priority was promotion this year this was achieved. Winning off course last night would have been icing on the cake but not to be sadly.

Sean, you are dead right. Once promotion was acheived at the end of match day 5 the priority was Armagh in June. I suspect and hope that is why Jack Brady got a run last night given his lack of game time so far this year.

Cavan seems to be doing the same things over and over again expecting different results, its not that were short of talented footballers in the county, to have 2 of the best midfielders in Ulster not even starting the game, bring on one of the best defenders we have and putting him in midfield when our defences was getting roasted, In my opinion i dont think Alan Clarke ,Fergal Flanagan,Jack Brady,Martin Dunne,D o Reilly is playing good enough to be on the team at the minute, this chopping and changing of the team doesnt work either, best players needs to start.quicker changes and correct changes during a match has to be made, if a player is playing bad he has to be swapped out straight away , not with a minute to go,, Maybe its time for a change in management, in fairness they done great work to get us to this level,, but im not sure if they have what it takes to bring Cavan football the next step up.

Black card

Folks, should black cards have been issued in respect of the penalty and block on Givney at the end of the game?

Just come to terms Cavan fans, ye aren't able to live with the heavyweight powers of the GAA world. Ye might be able to bat the likes of Offaly and Longford in the league and Antrim and Fermanagh in the Ulser but when you play the likes of the Rossies in the league or Donegal or Tyrone in Ulster ye have no chance.

I thought there should have been a black card brandished to the Roscommon player for the hit on Givney. Made no attempt to play the ball, and it was late and therefore should have warranted a black card. Penalty incident I thought he got that one right, with the yellow. Overall the ref had a good game, and did not cost Cavan the game unlike last Saturday in Portlaoise.

looking at the Monaghan and Donegal game, it looks like we are well off the pace. Specially with management who leaves the 3 inside forwards on for most of the game when they aren't at the races..then brings on Lyng who didn't even touch the ball or look as though he wanted to touch it. Argue, Tierney and Givney should have been on much earlier. And who thought it'd be a good idea to play Killian Brady midfield..Thought martin reilly had a fine game though

We are nowhere near the standard of Monaghan judging by today's match. We are doing far too much passing backwards and nobody willing to take scores. We need to react much faster on the line and make the changes when necessary. We never looked like we had the confidence to win last night.

We were brought right back down to earth with that performance. We have a lot to learn and a long way to go before we start talking about Ulster titles. Felt we lost that game on the line, management were too slow to make changes which cost us.

Don't understand Givney been left on the bench for so long. He should be centrefield or in the ff line where we struggled for scores.

On the plus side I thought Mackey, McDermott and Martin Reilly were good.

Defence was leaky compared to what it has been throughout the league.

Long way to go.

No player is too good to peave out. Very strong panel, Givneys form has been poor. Might be a wake up call for him that he can't take his place for granted

There s your answer now FoolsGold

Givney is not one of the best midfielders in Ulster.

What answer? He wasn't playing well so was dropped, get over it. Since Cavan lost he should have started? If we weren't as wasteful in th forwards it wouldn't be an issue

I think Cavan fans should take a look at the division 1 final.
Dubs are giving an exhibition of football.
We have a long way to go.

This is not having a go at the management or the players, as only a fool would not see that Cavan are in our best position since the Martin McHugh days, all I want to point out is with a few changes we could take the next step up.

Cavan have to have a rethink about having so many small players who lack power in the forward line, like Dunne and Jack Brady, we seen this over the last four years with the U21's, especially last week v Dublin, our smaller forwards need space to score, and really lack the power to take on tight markers.
Jack Brady was unable to break any tackle v Roscommon and in fact looked scared to take the hit, and we know Dunne can only beat a marker with his quick turns, if the defender gets a hand on him he has to turn back. Cavan can not afford to carry Brady and Dunne when we already have smaller type players like Mackey and Reilly in the forward line, if Dunne and Brady could take and break tackles like Mackey and Reilly it would be ok, but as it is they can't and it leaves us at far too much of a physical disadvantage.

Have to say just like v Dublin in the U21, the decisions of management were baffling, changes being made too late, and replacing one small forward (Brady) with another (Lyng), when we needed some power added to the forward line was a shocking bad decision. It was the sort of sub you'd think was to reward the player and no thought to what was needed.
On bringing on subs, why do Cavan bring on subs so very late in games, be us ahead or behind. What do they expect a player to achieve in two minutes of play.

We are always hearing about this strong panel we have,(as we were also told in the U21's too) but it seems management(like in the U21's) do not trust the subs enough to give them 15 minutes to effect the game.

would also say that despite how good a player Keating is, in my opinion he can sometimes let the team down with his shooting from crazy positions.

Dublin are best side in the Country with best panel - not much to learn

All our faults in the league campaign were on show last night. Luckily we didn't get a last-minute goal to win it or we might think that all was well. This was a reality check. Poor shot selection, poor passing, lazy tackles, some showboating and very slow to make changes that were crying out to be made. Roscommon not much better. Monaghan showed the way today with sensible no nonsense football. Long way to go.

Would agree that there's a bit to go but would have to say we have come an awful long way.

To be honest, last night is the poorest we've been for a while and we still had the chances to win it against a very decent Ros side.
