Tipperary All-Ireland winner Richard Stakelum and his son Conor who is the first Irish man ever to skate at the European championships.

Irish figure skater Conor Stakelum created history earlier this morning (Wednesday) when he was drawn to skate second out of the 37 competitors in the men's short programme at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Moscow.

Stakelum is the son of former Tipperary hurler Richard Stakelum who led the Premier County to Munster glory in 1987 when they defeated Cork after a replay.

His son Conor became the first male skater to represent Ireland in the event since the championships began 117 years ago. Stakelum qualified for Europeans by achieving minimum technical scores over the course of the past two seasons.

"I am so excited to finally be here," Stakelum told rte.ie. "Making it to Europeans has been my goal ever since I began skating and it is an honour to be the first man from Ireland to do so."
