Cian Mackey is a great inspiration for all future Cavan footballers! Many times his creativeness, heart and drive led Cavan out of tight games! Hopefully many young footballers will learn his ways,
Thanks Cian for the good times, enjoy your retirement. Please help inspire the next generation, they need you!
Faithfull fan!

Why is he leaving now? Did he do the winter training, get the gear, then leave? Now Cavan have to get in a replacement who is months behind the rest with training.

Quite simply the best player Cavan have produced in the last 15 years.

I have a strong feeling of regret that he has no silverware to show for his efforts with Cavan. One thing is for sure though, he owes us nothing and can proudly look back on his personal performances for the county team, a team that failed to earn him the silverware his talent deserved.

Best of luck Cian and enjoy your retirement.

Outstanding servant for Cavan over the years. Great vision and ability to take on opponents and we certainly don't have many players with those qualities at the moment.
Best of luck in your retirement Cian.

He wasn't back on the panel at any point since last July

Then he didn't retire...he just wasn't picked this year. How can you retire from something you're not part off?

Why are you nit picking. The man said hes done playing with Cavan, whether management want him or not, he is retiring from inter county football.

I'm sure he was asked back in. Probably said no to Mickey in November and took the xmas to consider his future. Then made his decision in the last week or 2.

It's not rocket science.

you sound very sour regarding Mackeys retirement in that do you think he went in for the 'free' gear and then decided he wasnt playing. im sure he has that much gear from his 15 years he wouldnt be stuck for it that badly to rejoin the panel to get it and then announce he is retiring. he is entitled to 'retire' after the service he has given to the county for the past 15 years despite him not being involved in the winter training. it draws a line in the sand for the speculation and questions that otherwise would be asked when we are a few games in and wondering why hes not featuring. there was probably a few more years in him as an impact sub but i guess he seen the writing on the wall with all the other players not available this year and wanted to go out on a 'high' of having played in an ulster final.

It's the same negative response that is blighting this forum for years! Cian was a great servant to Cavan, a bright part of alot Cavan performances. It does not hurt to pay a positive tribute to a good player who put in the hard yards on the pitch on good and bad days! It's a pity they don't have a Championship for the negative keyboard warriors!
Good luck and a good future to you Cian, well deserved!!!

Best wishes to Cian, a skillful player I always enjoyed watching, wonderful vision and drove hard at defences, big boots to fill.

What's the story here lads?. Is it not a bit strange that a fella would leave his home club with them going for 3 in a row having not won one for years.

He is living in Longford now, and would have a 40 minute commute to training/games if he stayed, on very bad roads.

Mullinalaghta to BJD is 27 minutes as per google maps. This is not the reason he is leaving Castlerahan

27 minutes from Mullinalaghta. But 40 minutes from where he lives I believe.
