Under 30,000 expected for Cork/Kerry semi-final
August 22, 2008
This Sunday's meeting of Cork and Kerry is expected to draw an all-time low crowd of under 30,000 for an All-Ireland SFC semi-final at Croke Park.
Such is the low crowd expected from both Munster counties that Croke Park officials have decided to close Hill 16 and the upper decks of the three stands for the last four clash.
Yesterday (Thursday) GAA Press Officer Siobhán Brady confirmed that this year has saw tickets sales drop considerably and that a crowd of around 30,000 at Croke Park on Sunday was expected at best.
"Ticket sales have been very low and they really don't look like picking up. Because of that it made sense to close Hill 16 and the upper decks. We took that decision for the All-Ireland quarters on Saturday a few weeks ago but we haven't done this before for a semi-final. At best there'd be a crowd of around 30,000 and that's including the walk-up crowd on the day."
The 2006 semi-final between the two rival sides drew a crowd of 58,703 and last year's All-Ireland final between the Munster kingpins saw a capacity of 82,126 in attendance.
