O'Donovan Rossa GAA Notes

August 21, 2008
O'Donovan Rossa junior B hurlers were narrowly defeated by five points on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-9 by Randal Ogs in the first round of the championship played last Monday night in Sam Maguire Park, Dunmanway. The first half was nip and tuck with no quarter asked or being given from either side. Skibb playing with the aid of the breeze held a deserved three point interval lead following a fine goal from centre forward Colin Crowley who capped a strong, surging, individual run through the heart of the Randal's defence before unleashing a powerful drive into the roof of the net. In the second half Randals applied incessant pressure in the early stages deservedly restoring parity following three consecutive points. Skibb showed their character in abundance responding with a goal and a point in quick successsion. The second goal came from a powerful Kieran Shannon free-kick. The towering full forward who was unerring from set pieces throughout the game followed this up by pointing a 65 to enable Skibb to hold a four point lead with a quarter of the game remaining. Randals dominated the final quarter against a tiring Skibb outfit, notching 1-6 to grind out a somewhat flattering five point winning margin. Team: Marcus O'Riordan, Tom Curran, Ollie Lynch, Darren Lynch, Alan Tanner, Alan Keane, Tom Foley, Niall McCarthy snr, Colm Crowley, John Paul Reen, Colin Crowley, Richard Thornhill, Gearoid O'Driscoll, Kieran Shannon, David Keohane. The minors hurlers suffered acute disappointment when a late scoring spree in the closing stages from Kilbree denied them a sensational victory in the first round of the minor hurling championship played last Thursday evening in Ardfield losing on a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-13. The minors staged a grandstand recovery after trailing by nine points early in the second half to level proceedings with four minutes remaining but two goals by Kilbree in a minute ultimately killed off a spirited Skibb comeback. Skibb exit the championship with their pride intact after playing their part in a thrilling encounter which augers well for the future. Best wishes are extended to Conor McCarthy who is included on the Cork football panel for this Sunday's semi-final clash against Kerry at Croke Park. The club would like to thank all the people who genorously contributed to their annual church gate collection held at all the local masses last weekend. This source of fundraising is vital to the long term running and stability of the club as it injects some much needed revenue into the club which is imperative in maintaining the club on an even financial footing. The club would like to extend their congratulations to Richard Coakley from Glencurragh, Skibbereen who competed for Ireland at the ongoing Olympics in Beijing in the men's lightweight four B final last weekend.
