Cork legend "appalled" by toddler's death
May 13, 2013
Former Cork hurling star Kevin Hennessy has criticised the HSE for not coming to the aid of a two-year-old boy who died last week after sustaining horrific head injuries following a freak fall from an upstairs window in Midleton.
Hennessy, who witnessed the tragic accident, rushed Lithuanian toddler Vakaris Martinaitis to hospital after being told that the ambulance was already on a callout. Vakaris was cremated in Ringaskiddy today after a funeral service in the Most Holy Rosary in Midleton.
"Whatever happens now will never bring back this child," Kevin said in the Irish Daily Star.
"We will never know whether the boy could have been saved or not if an ambulance had come."
Now 52, Kevin won three All-Ireland and seven Munster SHC medals, as well as an All Star award, during an illustrious career with Cork. The corner forward also won four Cork SHC medals and one All-Ireland club championship medal in the colours of Midleton.
