UCC began their defence of the Irish Daily Mail Sigerson Cup in emphatic fashion at the Mardyke yesterday where they comfortably disposed of the GMIT challenge.

THE outcome was never in doubt with the holders already out of sight by half-time when leading 0-8 to 0-1. After Paul Geaney and Johnny Ryan had traded early points, the Cork side took complete control as the likes of Geaney, Johnny Buckley, Kevin O'Driscoll, JB Spillane and Mark Reen displayed their undoubted talent.

The home outfit extended their lead to 0-11 to 0-2 12 minutes into the second half before a brief GMIT rally yielded unanswered scores from Eric Monaghan (two) and Ryan. But a UCC goal from substitute Stephen O'Brien made certain of a meeting with the winners of today's game between Sligo IT and IT Tralee in the quarter-final.
